The typical cyclist - criteria

Postby huw williams » Wed Nov 14, 2007 5:46 pm

OK the stats are in - there's some very specific stuff regarding best TT times/number of races etc and we'll deal with those when the data has been collated. In the mean time are you...

Male cyclist
aged 39 - 40
Weighing between 12st 8lbs and 13st
5' 9" tall or very close
Been riding for the last 11-12 years.
Averaging 7 to 7.5 hours riding per week (all up including comuting etc)

If you are, or your very close to being this person, then Cycling Weekly would like to hear from you????

No one can ever call me Mr Average!

Sex: tick
Age: 3-4 years too old, but could pass for a younger man in the right light
Weight: I need fewer pies than Jon to make up the weight - could do it by Christmas, no problem
Height: About an inch too short
Years riding: Club riding for 5 years, commuting about 14 years, have owned and ridden a bike since, ooh, about 1971.
Hours a week: Loads more, even if I just ride to work and do a normal club-run.

If it turns out that this 'average' chubby, arriviste, youthful part-timer is quicker than me, I am going to call it a day and take up golf

Apart from one glaring discrepancy - I don't think you've been 39-40 for a some time :D

OK on gender.
Too old (by 1 year and counting)
Too well insulated
Too tall (by 1")
Been riding too long (by about 20 years 8) )
Riding hours sounds about right for my winter routine (club run and commute via train when the weather is dry), but could be doubled for my summer routine.

I suspect this puts me out of contention for fame and glory.

 Huw, how about another series - take a fat old biffer and turn him into somebody who can compete at a (flatish - ie Hillingdon) cat 3/4 race?

Loads of people have done that mate - there's quite a few 'larger' riders regularly hammering round Hilingdon in the 3/4 race - so get over there - you'd do well I'm sure

Now, if you could do well in a hilly 3/4 race on the road - there's a story.

Here's an amazing stat from the data we collected - 35% of riders were over 14 stone!!!
