BBC Children in Need 100 Mile Challenge

Postby Snoop Doug » Tue Nov 06, 2007 7:45 pm

Oh crikey. I've decided to do a fund raiser for BBC Children in Need. How? Well on November 16th I'm going to ride my bike into work from my home in Carshalton to Gatwick. When I get there, the bike will get hooked up to a turbo trainer and I will continue to pedal until I cover a minimum of 100 miles  .

I've just set up a web page to receive donations http://www.justgiving.com/douglasshaw

This is going to be a painful and somewhat tedious experience so please - help to make it less so by sponsoring me. Any contributions very much appreciated.

Cheers - Snoop Screwloose

PS - Sean if you do send an en masse email out in the next week could you pls include this in it? Ta.

If we had more trainers we could 've made it a club thing to raise money. As it is you've got my support Doug.

Today's the day folks. I've had a great response so far and I'll be starting the long one soon. Brrrrrr! I may go past Gatwick and further South to reduce the time spent in the office on the turbo snoozer - we'll see.

Hope to report in later.

Yours daftly - Snoop

Day like this I'd ride to Brighton, back to Gatwick and just do the last 10 minutes on that infernal turbo 8)

Ah Huw - sage advice which arrived too late. My advice to anyone else would simply be do NOT volunteer to do something like this - part two really did me in.

I set off @ 8.30 freezing cold and rush hour traffic. I went down to Gatwick on the A23 figuring smaller roads might be a bit dodgy. So I went past our offices at Gatwick and continued to a section of the G25/53 where it got even bloomin colder! Me ears were burnin even tho I had a thermal skull cap ear cover thingie on. Me feet were cold too despite ole faithful overshoes. So - I returned to the office with 27 miles on the clock.

Was I really going to complete the ton on a turbo snoozer? Yup. I ground out 73 miles on the big ring and mainly on resistance level 4 (mine has 6 settings). I suffered big time and got as bored as you like although I got lots of passing encouragement from colleagues.

My ave speed was about 15.5mph outdoors mainly due to v busy rush hour traffic on narrow local roads. On the turbo snoozer I tapped out a 20mph average for over 3.5 hours.

I'm knackered. Got around £100 in a bucket @ the office which I managed to refrain from vomiting in  and there's about £325 on the website so far. Happy with that, I'll sleep well tonight.

Enjoy the club run tomorrow I'm going shopping for a new washing machine  (yawn).

Cheers - Snoop

Congratulations Snoop, anything more than half an hour on a turbo desreves praise.

Looks like you started something. Fatty's getting in on the act, and the Garmin read-out is a classic ...
