Hi Sylv, I had some wedges fitted at cyclefit in 2003. After an examination a pronating right foot and a short leg :shock: were diagnosed. I know some people haven't been impressed with them. But I think it was worth it - give em a go :D

What is over-pronation?

Which side of the leg/knee does it affect?

Sylv, what are the excercises you've been given to strengthen the inside of your thigh/s?

You can easily find out if you suffer from either one, by looking at the wear under a well-worn pair of shoes.

Exercises: have a (lightly inflated) football in between your thigs and apply pressure on it, and also the weighs apparel at the gym which motion is quite similar.


The thing is that pronation seems to be by far the most common ailment, and I've never seen any soles built for supination (outside of my heel soles very worn-out), so I think wedges could be what I need.

I also know my right knee, which has been trouble-free for the last few years, doesn't track right laterally, so that might affect the left side too.

I over-pronate heavily. Have £20 off-the-shelf inserts in pretty much all of my footwear, including my cycle shoes.

I used to get bad hip pain when walking in the Alps but the off-the-shelf inserts cured it. If I ride without my inserts my knees (especially the right one) move laterally much more on each pedal stroke.

One way to see if you over pronate - stand infront of the mirror without shoes, feet facing forwards about hip width apart. Squat down. Watch if your ankles roll inwards when you squat down. Mine do. If I do the same when standing on my inserts, they roll in far less.

Not sure it'll affect one side of the knee or the other, but would definitely place more stress on it. Pedalling efficiency would also be reduced.

So if im getting the pain in my left knee more than my right knee, but still a similar pain in my right knee. But I've only gotten the pain since getting on a new bike with a slightly different position. Then the pain is likely to be the caused by somehting to do with the position on the bike rather than a phyisological condidtion with my body right?

Anyhow, I havn't ridden since saturday, so hopefully with the changes I've made, plus time for the knee to calm down, I should be good to go tomorow...

I just feel a little peturbed as I have never really had a problem with my knees like this over the past three & 1/2 years. But with a bit of luck, it'll be nothing.

I have my cycle-fitted bike now since the beginning of June and I can honestly say that, for me it was worth the money.

Damn Adam, pains in both knees? you need to take it steady and spin low gears till things settle down. Make sure you're not over compensating for pain in one knee by altering you're pedaling style and creating pain in your other knee. It happens believe me :(

Toks the pain in the right knee was very very feint if at all compared to the left. It was just the left that really started to cause me grief on saturday, but hopefully its calmed down now. I'll take it easy tomorow to see what happens...

I'd also cut back on the miles till your in the clear. Perhaps no more than a couple of hours to start with, head home if you get any pain and get frozen peas on ya knees :)
