I don't think it's technically possible to go from 4th cat to Elite in one season by racking up BC points alone.

Elite Category - To any member who:
6.2.5.1 is a registered member of a U.C.I. registered trade team.
6.2.5.2 has gained 300 points during the previous season whilst holding an elite or 1st category licence,
6.2.5.3 at the 31st December of the previous year was listed in the top 10 riders in the Senior Men’s National Cross Country Mountain Bike Ranking System

So, getting there on point or MTB ranking depends on the previous year not the current year. However, show enough potential to get signed up by a UCI registered trade team and you get an elite licence automatically.

When Graham Jones turned senior in 1976 he got to 1st cat (not sure if there was an Elite category back then) in 4 weeks

Worth bearing in mind that Tim Elverson wasn't the typical 4th Cat standard when he started. He was already exceptionally fit and strong. I'm not 100% sure what sport he switched from - it may even have been racing big motorbikes.

Others whom we've noted as rapid-improvers such as Brett too had previously raced in younger days. Past experiences do help significantly. Brett also had a big kick which helped him rack up the points too.

So, yes, you can improve very quickly, especially if you are already a fit and capable rider. If not, it will, of course, take that bit longer to reach your potential.
