And it's Hello from him!

Postby George » Mon Dec 03, 2007 7:06 pm

Thought my neck was healing fine when 10 days ago I went in for a scan to see how it was all going and felt confident they were gonna remove my neck brace.

The SHO doctor looked at my results informed me that there was still a crack that was not healing and surgery would defiantly be required and I would be called and informed when to come back for the operation.

I felt gutted and a bit depressed, I wasn't expecting this at all, oh well I thought if it needs to be done then lets get on with it.

Then last week I had the call to come into Hospital on Sunday afternoon for surgery today.

I arrived at hospital and they weren't expecting me, but fortunately had a bed free so I stayed in last night. I was scheduled in for Theatre this afternoon.

I awoke this morning and the nurse checked my blood pressure, but kept saying it wasn't working she couldn't read it because my HR was too low to be normal. She called in the sister who checked it manually and asked if I did and sports, once I answered she then confirmed it was correct and I was indeed abnormal at 36

Then an hour later my consultant/top man turned up and told me I did not require an operation, I could remove my neck brace, didn't need to wear it again, go home, get back to normal, start physio and start cycling and I would make a full recovery.

I was astounded and couldn't believe it, then he showed me my scans and X-rays explained everything to me and told me the SHO doctor was American and always overreacting.

What a result I'm well happy now, started Metis this afternoon, cheers Marco. :D :D

George... Thats fantastic mate!

You seemed a little down last week, understandably so. But this is great news. Still, probably best to go easy for a while. There must still be a greater element of risk if you were to crash again? The best advice I've picked up in the last three months... Listen to the physio, I did everything he said, to the letter. And as a result my shoulder has been healing much quicker than he first anticipated...

So, maybe there's a 1st cat in you yet huh!? My moneys sure as hell on you to get there first!

Next season's 2/3+ races just got a hell of a lot harder... :P

Great news George, glad to hear the ops not needed and you can get that bloody brace off. Your approach to having to wear that rigid thing for so long has been nothing short of laudable. Continued to smile and take it in your stride when most of us would have been driven mad within a few days.

HR of 36! I think that's what Big Mig's was so I expect even quicker times in the TTs now. :D

Almost as good as:

Eat man eat!! Don't just laugh at me suffocating while trying to eat an energy bar and ride, try it yourself! lol

Cool. I went to a conference today and one of the sessions was on behavioural finance. Don't worry I am not going to bore you with the finance stuff, but he was showing some stats on confidence of what you are saying and ability to get the answer right.

There was quite a lot of correlation between confidence and getting the answer right for UK weather men, basically they give very broad overview of what the weather is going to be like and therefore tend to be right, although not that specific. He then worryingly went onto doctors and on his fancy graph it showed that as the confidence of the answer coming from the doctor went up (e.g. the doctor was more confident that he had the right answer), the actual amount of times he was right in his diagnosis remained the same as if he had lower confidence in his answer, if not lower than when the doctors were not confident.

I won't tell you what percentage the doctors actually got right, this may make you decide not to bother ever going to see one ever again.

I have to admit it was very worrying, so if your doctor is very confident about his diagnosis of what is wrong with you, I would ask him to make sure and then go and see another doctor and see if he says the same thing. Judging by the stats I saw today I reckon you could get a fair few different diagnosises.

Have fun.

Cheers

Hi George. It's great that you don't need surgery. Mind you, what a complete waste of NHS resources and unnecessary confusion and annoyance for you!

It's worth remembering that many SHO's are pretty much useless grunts. I won't bore everyone with the details of my experiences of SHOs.

Nonetheless, there really is not a massive rush to get top-end fitness back. From what I've seen of the clubruns and forum posts plenty of guys are still hammering round far quicker than they need to or even should do for the time of the year. Top-end stuff is relatively easy-come-easy-go. Gettting the body well-conditioned for next year and better prepared for the longer races takes a bit more structure. My suggestion is to start off easy and don't start to build the mileage until the New Year (as the days start to lenghten). Other than the occasional burst of speed here and there, speed-work can wait for many weeks yet.

All very good advice, I'm sure.
But what you haven't seemed to grasp is that George only has two speeds:
Stop and eyeballs-out.
