east grinstead cc ride

Postby Stu Merckx Man » Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:14 pm

met up with paul and marek and mareks mountain biker friend for a ride on the east grinstead club run.

only about 5 of them turned up! it seamed alien to me after only riding the addiscombe club run.

they had one super strong rider called steve dennis who was crazy strong. hes a really good time trialist, and he looked it. his pedal action was so smooth, and even up the big hills he looked like he was puting in no effort at all.

when we started off my legs were still tickleing a bit from yesterday, but once i got going they felt fine. within about 3 miles we had halved the group of riders... i say we, i mean steve.

the route was a really pleasant one with lots of nice roads and hills, although it was ear crunchingly cold. there were a few big climbs during the ride and i managed to stick with steve up them all, though only just. a lot of the time it seamed like he was testing me or something...if i was riding beside him up the big climbs he would slowly increase the pace so i would have to draft behind him...then he would look round every so often and ramp up the pace slightly...i was never sure if he was going as hard as he could, i certainly hope he was on some of the occasion! but his bike would never wobble on the climbs, whether mine would be rocking violently from side to side, or my back would be bobbing up and down.

funny moment when we got to a massive hill but paul thought it was a small one, and half attacked it, i stuck behind steve and he slowly edged too, and then passed paul, and then dropping him

towards the end of the ride it was just me paul and marek left, after splitting with steve and the others to head home. we kept it nice and fast, and marek had enough left in the tank for a little sprint into east grinstead.

nice ride, about 46 miles. im going to try and go out with them some more on sundays if i dont have other offers...is that dis loyal of me!?

cheers,
stu

As I have said in the past Steve D is an awesome rider, although I nearly crashed into him when he hit that hole and lost his front wheel, that was very close to being a nasty little accident.

Great ride today although it is evident that Paul and I (mainly me) need to begin to sort ourselves out in the new year to be able to keep up with Stu. Blimey mate, you are flying, that hill out of East Grinstead up to Turners Hill I was on the rivet and you didn't look that bad at all. Happy that Steve D gave you a bit of a run for your money though.

The really good thing about the EGCC ride is the fact that you get to go out on new roads, and quite nice ones and the fact that the rides are quite rolling/hilly which can only help.

I won't be around for a couple of weeks so have a good Xmas. EGCC do a timetrial on Xmas eve or day I think which I am sure they would like you to go along to. They have booked a hall for food and drinks etc afterwards as well.

Cheers

Yep he took both no tri-bar prizes at the SCCU 10 and 25 weekend this year. I think he rides a lot of the early season sporting TTs on his road bike and grabs most of/all the no tri-bar prizes.

He did a 52:25 for a 25 miler and a 21:08 for a 10 mile TT this year. That seems quite quick to me.

Cheers

Last year, in the SL handicap at Wivelsfield, SD sat on the front of the group, and it was like riding behind a motorbike, he just churned out an awesome amount of power to pull back the other groups.

Then he rode the EGCC cyclo cross and came 4th !!!

And he is a really nice down to earth guy to talk to.

Glad he gave you a hard time!!!
