Hillingdon 26th Dec

Hillingdon 26th Dec

Postby Keith » Wed Dec 26, 2007 4:03 pm

There's one downside to having a partner who's mad keen on cycling; Michelle stopped drinking and went to bed at a sensible time. I wasn't quite so conscientious, so was a little jaded we arrived at Hillingdon for the 11am 4th Cat race. Have to admit, I'd have rolled over and gone back to sleep but Michelle was keen on racing. Managed to get my act together by the end and get a decent placing. Michelle came 11th, just a whisker out of the points.

Unsurprisingly, the hangover had completely disappeared by the end!

Very Well Done Keith, 2nd I believe and Michelle all those damaged male egos rolling in behind you. You must be delighted, points don't matter too much getting competitive does.

E/1/2/3 I got there at 12.00 for the 12.00 start. Signed on and got the OK to race. Rushed into the kit put the black arm band on with thoughts of Bob, Sid Armstong, Gus Andrews and Cyril Hinton and really got motivated for today. No warm up straight to into it and joined the bunch. As the leaders came by Adam shouted Happy Christmas but I nearly didn't recognise him. He's not in Yellow......Everyone has their reasons but I ain't leavin I admire and love too many peeps in the club. And the history it's all priceless to me.....oh yea the race....It was a bigger field again and there were loads of those orange numbers E&1s making it an active race. Got away a few times and Adam was always there. Looking worryingly strong and smooth. With five laps to go one of the DeVer riders, Rudi I think, saw 9 away and tried to bring them back but sat up 200M short so I jumped out of the bunch and took Steve Golla, Sigma 1st Cat, across. This was the move and one of eleven would win.

It was anthing but smooth and I didn't contribute much, just soft pedalling through, then Andrew Bye the winner, I think, went clear and someone else just eased away. We let them go. Three laps to got and I went clear as well. The Milton Keynes 1st cat rider towing the group could not bring me back and with two to go I was catching the second rider. At the bell I was still gaining on him and well clear of the lead group. I thought second was on but (there always is a but or an if only) I ran out of talent, lungs, legs and gears as all the lead group flew past at the end of the back straight. From an easy 3rd at the bell to 11th in half a lap. Misery, at least it was the break. This was my first BCF points in more than two years but so much more then that is the realisation that I can be really competitive again. Saturday can not come soon enough. BCF points matter not one jot to me, it's the racing.

[quote]I was taking it pretty easy for the first half of the race, watching while my Sigma team mate, Steve Golla was riding aggressively and making what was the most promising move of the early race in a break of 4
[from Andrew Bye's blog]

Yes George, Andrew Bye is pretty strong, as is his afore mentioned team mate... I was in that break! Man it was hard work.

Cheers Toks, and yes, of course I was posing for my Mum and Dad! Nice to see you've kept checking my blog. I had a great race yesterday, getting in a promising early break, with some super strong 1st cats. Then the rest of the race I seemed to navigate the field with ease, being able to move up and down the pack without many problems. I was just a bit frsutrated to miss the final split, and was unfortunately too far back to make it across with Keith. Who must also be thanked for helping me into the earlier break also, he's so strong! I did try later on though, with Jason Streather (another 1st cat, who won the winter series last year), but we just couldn't close the gap. So I settled back into the bunch to see what happened. It was clear the leading 11 were gone for the day. So I started to prepare for the final bunch sprint for 12th  . There Jason Streather then had a team mate lead him out, with a Twickenham rider just off his shoulder, then me just off his. It looked promising, then on the last bend the Twickenham rider decided he'd had enough so moved right, right into me, it was all I could do to avoid him while the rest of the bunch galloped. I wasn't amused, but at the end of the day, it was for 12th so who cares.

I really enjoyed the race, when I was in the bunch I felt very comfortable. Then when on the attack felt pretty strong also. I just burnt my matches at the wrong time so to speak. I smashed a few of my power records anyway! But I have much to learn about racing with Elites and 1st's, and yesterday was a big lesson. But I have taken a lot of confidence from the race, mixing it with 1st cats in my first serious race post operation is more than I could have asked for. And I havn't even been out with the training group yet

Keith was awesome, and a tactical genious. Andrew Bye might have the legs, but I don't think there were many others who could have matched Keiths tactical experience yesterday. It was amazing watching the way he sets himself up. Certainly a wheel to follow.

I'm not going to do many of the Winter series, maybe a few here and there. Mainly just wanted to get the legs going again and expell some of the gremlins in my head. They're long gone, and im back in the mix...

Well done mate, your training is obviously going quite considering you viewed Hillingdon as just a taster session. How old is Andrew Bye? He looks quite young...It was really nice of him to post the really helpful, not giving much away charts on his blog. No average or normalised race power readings of course

Maybe... Would you like Haematocrit levels, lactate levels and VO2max levels with that Sir? lol

Thanks Toks, I've taken the get out there and do it approach, no messing about... give it a go... havn't see you ride a bike since... September, in fact that was just the last time I saw you with your bike, not on it. So maybe it was... March!?

Not sure how old Andrew Bye is, not much older than me though, maybe 22? I see him out training sometimes too, and standing around chatting in Sigma's...

Adam,

Does the Powertap software not tell your peak 5min figure and 1 hour?

If you want to know what the normalized power was for your file I can load it up on mysoftware. Would need the file as a csv. Drop me a pm if your interested.
