What do people do with their punctured tubs?

Do you repair them yourselves? Bin them or send them to someone who can do the repair?

I used glue for years - very messy.

Converted to tub tape now, but for crit racing I add a couple of steps to Rich V's excellent guide.

1. using a screwdriver, score the rim for adhesion.
2. apply a layer of glue to the rim ONLY
3. let it dry (24 hours)
4. apply tub tape etc etc.

Again, a personal preference as I find the tape adheres better to the layer of glue than the rim, but have no problems with it adhering to the tub.

I haven't had much luck with the Conti tubs. First a rear puncture after only a couple rides (which was probably bad luck), now the replacement rear (Gp 4000) has like a scratch on the sidewall from where the tube is starting to poke out - will need replacement. I don't know how this could have happened (no my brake pad wasn't rubbing on the tire). I've only done races on it so not done stuff like riding off a pavement of such which could have damaged the sidewalls.

What brands do people use? I like the look of the Schwalbes, but they are even pricier than the Contis.

What are the Vittorias like for puncture protection on say a sporting course with all their lovely surfaces? Obviously I'd want a fairly fast tub but not at the expense of going fast for 3/4s of the distance and then punturing. E.g. the SCCU 10 and 25 sporting courses both had a couple of sections that were quite a dodgy surface.

I used them all last season on all types of courses. The only time I punctured was in the peeing rain on a dual carriageway.

Vittorias are lovely grippy tyres even in the wet, but the price you pay is lack of puncture protection. They soak up grit like a sponge because the tread is soft, and hence in wet races they puncture (I once had 3 in a wet sl race).

Contis have a harder tread, but weaker sidewalls.

I have just ordered a pair of Schwalbe Ultremo as I found a good offer on them

They have puncture protection too

"The choice of the pros" apparently ... should be good enough for me :)

Wouldn't worry sylv, if you puncture you can always nick Paul's spare wheels :wink:

Mind you I hope he upgrades them by next year, I had to stop and get my own spare after 20 miles his were so rough :lol:

One slight variation to the tubtape instructions is to just use short strips of tape between alternate spokes so you tape about 50% of the rim rather than all the way round. This is perfectly adequate for time trialling - Keith corners fast and hard and hasn't dislodged one yet - not track though. The advantage is that it makes tub removal easier if you have to effect a quick change mid-race. Might be harder to do the pencil trick though.
