Sunday Ride - 20th January

Postby Andrew G » Tue Jan 15, 2008 3:38 pm

Saturday looks like it may be a bit touch and go weatherwise but Sunday is looking better. I hope to do the CR anyway but will definately be heading out for a decent ride on Sunday (unless the weather changes and it's throwing it down :? ).

Route - Same as the New Year's eve ride for the start:
Up to Selsdon, Old Farleigh Road (hill), Slines Oak Road (hill), down titsey and the long descent down Pootlings, left at Four Elms and up Toy's (big hill), right at Westerham.

But then along and go up Polhill, down through Halstead, back along Shire Lane, up the nasty little climb at the end and climb in to Downe. Then along from Biggin Hill to come back through Tatsfield. If still anything in the legs then back via Hesier's Hill otherwise a nice fast blast along the top road to Warlingham.

Don't know how far that'll be but it'll be a reasonable distance with some tough climbs thown in.

Pace will be a "good steady effort". Not racing along, not hanging about either but a constant effort. Difficult to put an average speed on it because of the hills and it'll probably still be blowing a hooley but plan on making your legs ache and having a kip in the afternoon.

No cafe stop so bring grub with you.

Start 9:30am at GBs

Please let me know if you're interested.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Sounds good, Andrew. Should be OK to do this - will give you plenty of warning if not.

Thanks for the kind words Marco. It'll be a bit quicker than NYE, i.e not cruising between the hills. Ability wise I'd think a good/strong 17s rider to be safe unless you're a good climber otherwise the accumulation of hills and distance will tell towards the end. You can cut one early hill off (Slines Oak) but that's about it really, unless you're suffering after Polhill and knock some distance off at the end by dropping straight in to Coney Hall rather than do the Downe/Tatsfield extension.

sounds great, and somewhere new. I'll confirm closer to w/e once I've checked Mrs Dombo's plans. Am keen to try out my new wheels and tyres on something other than black ice (so far I think they're total pants).

If Saturday's wet I should be able to swing this one.

Sounds like I might need to unearth my gears though!

I presume that's for my benefit

I was thinking of doing the Kent reliability ride on Sunday, but if I don't get up early enough for that I'll do this instead.

Mike - Yeah gears probably best, or use a flip-flop with an 11 on one side and a 30 on the other.

Snoop - Wouldn't fancy your chances of getting home, hosed, and in to Croydon for 1. You could drop the Downe/Tatsfield bit, skip Shire lane and bomb back on the main A road and you might be okay. If you fancy a couple of hills out that way then you could always go as far as the top of Titsey, then head along Pilgrims Way (although it can flood a bit with the heavy rain we've had), and go up Star Hill before dropping back home from Knockholt.

Jon - Possibly, sorry.

Count me in for this one, Ive got a lower gear on my new bike so should find it slightly easier going than the NYE ride which was great fun. Look forward to this one to, bring on those climbs.

Sorry, Andrew - can't make it after all. Changes to the published programme for this weekend - namely a visit to the Tate Modern :D - mean that riding day has been pushed back from Sunday to the CR on Saturday. See you then if you're out.

Me neither unfortunately. Shall try the Saturday CR weather permitting. See if I can stay upright.

Okay then, CR's a definate no for me as it's due to rain all day and I need to go and try and find a "new" car.

Sunday weather looks better although we may get a bit of light rain towards the end of the ride, shouldn't be a problem just bring a rain cape / jacket and we'll pick the speed up :) .

I want to leave GBs pretty punctually and be on our way. If you get delayed by a puncture then I'm happy to wait so call me on my mobile. If you don't have my number and plan to come then send me a pm and I'll send it to you.
