lots of people use it just to mean lame and I didn't intend it as a term of disrespect

however i can often be thoughtless in the way I communicate and i'm sorry I came across that way to some of you

It is only a word of disrespect if you use it in the wrong context, like using other words asociated with black people, I have black friends who accept that its not what you say, its how you say it (how its meant, and the tone, if you see what I mean)

My (much younger) sister uses the term 'that's so gay' all the time and refuses to accept it's offensive. In fact she thinks that if you're offended by it it's your problem not hers. I disagree and we crossed swords on the topic at New Year...I can't even remember what it was now that she thought was 'so gay'...but it would have been with reference to a situation or person in a negative context. She argues that it is nothing to do with gay people/culture and simply a word used to describe a situation. But I think she's wrong. If you describe something as 'so gay' then surely the only interpretation is that you are saying it is something associated with gay culture...and if you're using the term, as she does, to denote that something is negative, then the only interpretation I can see is that she is saying gay culture is a negative thing.

Yeah but hang on a minute, a hundred years ago if not less, gay meant happy, right? Im sure many still use the word in this way.

So its only natural for words to have new meanings attached to them by differing cultures, right?

Like saying wicked when something is good, or even thats 'bad', when really, its actually very good...

There is a gay guy in my class at uni, and even he openely uses the phrase 'don't be gay' if someone is doing something stupid. Like I said before I think its the context in which its meant and is interpreted thats important.

Words and phrases change meaning over time.
In this case, the word 'gay' has morphed into another meaning altogether while keeping the original meaning as well.
Language is a fluid and dynamic thing that's constantly changing.

I thought we were only talking about kid's schoolground talk there - who would seriously say such and such thing was "gay" in an adult conversation?

As kids we said the most horrible things, most often because we didn't know the full meaning of the words - when I was small "PD" was the common insult - from "pederast" but with the implied meaning of "gay". There were racial insults too, but you grow out of these things when you are about 13 don't you?
