I drilled holes in my turbo so that it would be lighter for the steep climbs but it hasn't made much of a difference, so tomorrow night I'm going to try my lightest wheels which I think will do it . Does anyone have any other tips for the hills on the turbo :idea:

I hate the damn things :twisted: , but see they have a use.
My problem is that I cannot ride smoothly on mine. Are the current crop any better?

I'm with you Paul, and mine is a low end one that makes smooth riding difficult.

I think the new ones where the roller is sprung(?) are designed to give a road feel. That said they cost enough that I can't see me buying one as I'd rather go out on the road so the use of it would be very, very limited. If your commuting then I think you can get both some base steady miles, and some interval work by going hard up hills/drags and/or leaving it in a bigger gear and staying seated on the hills/drags. You'll always be able to be more scientific on a turbo and use set timed intervals where you aren't governed by the end of the drag or a set of traffic lights. Personally I'd rather be a poorer cyclist and still smiling than switch to turbo training as a staple.

I did like the rollers though, on fixed of course, if anyone knows of any sets going cheap then I could be interested.

Also, they'll fold up so you can stick em in your car and use them to warm up at 2am in those gordforsaken dual-carriageway laybys where you testers hang out all summer :D

I thought the only advantage to indoor workouts was that you can't fall off. Now I see that I'm to be denied even that.

You need to see through the short term pain and discomfort and appreciate the long term gain. If you want to try out a turbo you can have a go on my old spare one; it's a entry level minoura with 5 different resistance settings. Had very good reviews when I bought it and was only about £80 two years ago, I htink you can get it new for about £50 now. You're more then welcome to join me and Troy for aerobic base builder, hillacious, or perhaps even have mercy. My garage is very unglamorous but I do have a light and a laptop with speakers so I can see and hear what I'm meant to be doing.

Yes I was suffering on Sunday Huw but I hadn't been on the bike for a couple of weeks. I was fine 'til Shire and then okay on the flat but the slightest gradient hurt like Hell. With you and Keith in front of me you weren't exactly forming a huge barrier to shelter behind either

The 2 or 3 targets I have this year are between June and the start of September so there's no point in flying in January. I had a bit of "Christmas star" syndrome last year and was dead by August having gone quite well all through winter and spring.
