Oldest Addiscombe Members

Postby ajay khandelwal » Wed Jan 30, 2008 12:08 pm

Hi,

It was great to be at funeral of Eddie, what a magnificent turnout...and I never knew about his life as a submariner...

Over the next month to interview the five oldest existing Addiscombe CC members to produce individual life stories of their cycling careers...

Perhaps its something we could present to them at the next ACC dinner ?

I need some help from the long standing members - Marco etc - about who these five would be - can you help me with a list...

Thanks Ajay

You'll be an antique :D

Not to mention a lot better preserved than some people out there who look old and act old before they get past 40!
Then youve got the political situation in the UK with the emergence of the Communist Party, some ACC members joining it, others being judged as having sympathies towards it

interesting... ACC = Association of Communist Cyclists?

It's known that a socialist newspaper was somewhat involved in the "Paragon" movement of cycling clubs in the middle part of the 20th Century (see Tim Hilton's book One more kilometre and we're in the showers). Is this what's behind the legendary animosity between ACC and Norwood Paragon?

What have you lot (other than Marco) been doing to upset Old Ports? They start their CR at the bottom of Corkscrew Hill on a Sunday and I sometimes see them in the Surrey/Kent lanes. Seem a nice enough bunch to me. I told them there will hopefully be a few Addiscombe over for their reliability trial and they didn't scream so perhaps they've forgiven you Marco. We'll be on our best behaviour though incase we're still building bridges for you :D .

You're quite right about the Clarion clubs Marco. Their constitution includes:

"The Clarion’s objects shall be: To protect and further the interests of cycling and cyclists. To
promote Mutual Aid, Good Fellowship and support for the Principles of Socialism."

But no mention of Freedom for Tooting.

Looking at you two, one wouldn't guess you were about the same age - but then they say having children is what makes you old

Theres quite a number of local cyclists in the 40's bracket that I would have either placed above or below it, strange that. What does a 'proper' fortysomething cyclist look like!?

Oh, and I'll second Graemes mention of Tim Hilton's 'One more kilometre and we're in the showers', definately the greatest cycling book i've ever read, well one day i'll finish it
me describing them as a 'crappy club' during a speech I made at the club dinner in 1994

That did kind of sour our relationship at the time....

Probably not many of them remember it now, though I still chuckle silently when I am talking to "Ossie" etc :D
