Road rash bumps/bruises

Postby Dombo » Thu Jan 31, 2008 10:25 pm

How long do these normally last? Mine from skidding on black ice the other week on the way to the CR still looks like I'm trying to lay an egg out the top of my thigh. It was my first fall as I'm relatively new to road biking, hence my ignorance. Thanks for any advice.

Ive only ever suffered the usual grazes (except for a compound fracture on my right thumb) and they usually heal up with in a couple of weeks. A lump sounds like really bad bruising unless its a cyst? Just guessing really, if it's still there in another week best to get it checked out really.

As soon as you do it clean thoroughly and apply plenty of Savlon or similar. When I came off in Italy there were a couple of nurses staying there who recommended "keeping it greasy" to aid healing and avoid hard scabbing and too much scaring. You can still put gauze over the top to stop it rubbing on clothes but savlon underneath.

When the scab formed it formed soft and never set hard. I cleaned it and changed the dressing 2 or 3 times a day. After a while it became a bit itchy but I tried to avoid scratching and sort of rubbed it gently. Gradually as it healed underneath because the scab was soft it would slide off in great sheets leaving nice new pink skin underneath :D .

Just depends how bad it was. One at the top of my thigh is still visible from a year ago! It took ages to go down. Now its just a patch a slightly darker colour than the rest. But I did slide down the road a considerable distance on it.

Most lumps bumps and scrapes will be largely un-noticeable after 2-3 weeks and completely healed 4-6 weeks. Depending how deep and whether it scars (when I broke my leg 6 years ago, the "hole" where the bone protruded is still clearly visible).
