Bike bags

Postby DavidD » Tue Feb 05, 2008 9:06 pm

Anybody got any advice to give on bike bags? I want to take my bike to the States for 3 weeks at the end of March and then to Majorca in April. I guess I'm looking for a good compromise between weight, protection and cost.

make sure it has wheels, ypu'll be bloody greatful when you rolling it through the airport (then again i dont have a road bike in mine but a 36lb mini dh bike  )

and then get a bike box and put it inside to make it rigid so the bike doesnt slop all over the place whent he nasty baggage handlers touch it.

chain reaction cycles do a good own brand one, £59.99 when i got mine with wheels bags, rollers and the lot

Chain Reaction seem to do two similar ones: their own brand at £69.99 and 'Brand-X' at £59.99. They also seem to get similar user-ratings. Is there any real difference, do you know?

Sidcup cycles hires hard cases, there might even be a nice agreeable person who could lend you one? If someone is willing to lend out their hard case could I possibly borrow it at the end of May please?

:D

i suppose marco has a point when you got spangly carbon frames as opposed to an downhill bike

i suppose it all depends on the effort you go to padding it out inside the box, ie masses of bubblewrap normally does it!!

but definately get a seperate cardboard box to make the bag more rigid!

then again i may not be the authority on road bike travel as i've never done it before

[quote="marco"]dont get a bag, ive got one and they are sh1t!!!
If a baggage handler wants to drop loads of suitcases on it your bike is gonna be damaged

Yep - yer man is right. I have a bike bag - used it once to get to Ventoux and the bike got badly damaged in it en route. They're a waste o money methinks.

Whatever you do, make sure you put spacers (or old hubs) in the dropouts.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I've used a bike bag for around 8 trips abroad and have never had any damage. I use spacers between the dropouts, take the rear mech off, a fair amount of bubble wrap taped around the frame, and some hefty cardboard inside the bag too.

never had any trouble either, but then like Jon I take the rear mech off, fit spacers in the dropouts and use copious amount of bubble wrap, but I also take the crank arm off so it sits flat in the box. Usually add a few T-shirts etc as extra padding, which saves on baggage allowance!!!!

and the box in a bag idea works well.

Andrew G has a B-Twin one which is the best I've seen

Allowing a midget like him to lug a hefty old touring bike made of pig-iron around need's a bloody good bag I can tell you

On sale at Decathlon at around £115
