CTC Hilly 50 - Saturday 16th Feb

Postby Andrew G » Mon Feb 11, 2008 1:07 pm

CTC Hilly 50 from Ryka's is this coming Saturday, so why not mingle with the yellow people there than do the usual CR.

£3 entry on day
£2 if you pre-register (worth doing to save filling out details on the day, just sign in).

Full details on the new CTC blog page here
Download a routecard from here.
You'll get a routecard at sign in but you may want to analyse the route first, or laminate it at the office to stop it getting sweaty and unreadable after the first hill :D . Truth be told you probably won't need one as loads of people of all speeds do this ride and most know the route well.

I'll be riding there obviously and will be at CSS at 8:30 if anyone wants to meet up.

If you haven't done it before or are newer to tough / longer ridesthen it does feel more like 50 miles than 50kms, but you can always drive out and leave your car at Ryka's to avoid having to ride home afterwards with your legs half dead.

Having done the Kent hills last week. I need more hills see you at CSS 8:30. I will bring my usual slow bike with me just to make sure it feels like 60 miles.

Is that the earliest you can start - 10am? I was hoping to do this but have to be in Epsom for lunch.

Yes that's the earliest, the CTC are more civilized and don't get you out of bed too early. You can still be back for lunch, just stick on Gary Dodd's wheel all the way round.

They probably need the extra time for aero beard-trimming.

Looks like a Sunday outing for me this weekend, then.

I'm in.

If anyone hasn't done this before, it is an excellent ride through delightful Surrey countryside and villages. It is, however (as the name suggests), hilly, so you don't get much chance to appreciate the surroundings. It's also relatively short and if you're really suffering it's easy enough to bail out and make your way back to Dorking and Box Hill aong the main road.

If you fancy an Andrew Green-esque LSD session, ride out to Ryka's, do the Hilly 50 and then blast back home from the top of Box Hill. That's a four to five hour session for most of us. Just make sure the sofa's clear of pets, ironing and small children when you get back.

I reckon Sean wants to do this really.

Adrian - start at 10, finish at 12, A24 to Epsom, lunch at 12.26. What's the problem?

Marco I'm going on the basis that the chances of us being on our way at 8:30 on the dot are pretty slim (probably be nearer an 8:45 actual depart but if you say 8:45 then you don't leave 'til 9 etc, etc). It's also a bit of an uphill drag out there so it allows 45mins - an hour for a gentle ride staying together out to Ryka's rather than a leg ripper.
It's a 10am start but you need to sign in and pay first so want to be there a bit before and judging from previous years it gets a bit chaotic the closer to 10 with a bundle of people trying to sign on at once and then be away with the first riders.

Any time to kill can easily be sorted with a greasy burger and tea with a blob of fat in it from Ryka's. :D

Do you mind not insulting my old cycling club - they're the ones running this event. As well as the CTC they are also members of the Kingston Phoenix (including Gary Dodd's wife). Anyway when this event started there wasn't such a gap between CTC riders and road racers - they WERE the same! And nowadays you'll find that 90% or more of the riders will be roadies with more shaved legs than unshaved beards - thanks to the work of the current organisers in promoting it more widely through the internet.

Anyway why get up earlier? Nice civilised time - and the afternoon to recover :D

I say chaps this looks like a jolly good wheeze, what! Messrs Ingram, Green, Marco & Avery et al.....you may have just found yourself another candidate for this 'un. Will get clearance from Baroness Snoopington and all being well see you there. Hilly rides, you gotta love 'em! Come on Sean - you know you want to

Well pointed out, It came as quite a shock first time out, seeing hardly a saddlebag in sight and the likes of Mr. Dodd rip through the field. I'll probably be one of the few with a rack on my bike doing it :D .
