near miss

Riding South on Gulf Drive, Anna Maria Island, Florida this morning the strong head wind knocked 5 coconuts out of a palm tree just ahead of me. As they cracked and I swerved to avoid I cursed the subtropics in February and felt glad to be heading back to UK tomorrow! 8)

This could only happen to the globe trotting roving reporter branch of ACC. Excellent near miss

My near miss this morning is that I was almost taken off by a white line! Paint on some is thicker than you think, it was a bit greasy and as I was overtaking traffic (with no leaning angle) my front wheel slipped off the side of one

Paint on tarmac is notoriously slippery in the wet.
Nothing changes.
At Herne Hill in the Sixties when it was damp on the track the shout would always go up.... "Keep off the Dunlops".
That's because the advertising word Dunlop was painted in white in the middle of the curved end bankings, and accidents were a regular occurrence for the unwary.

New markings on the Addiscombe Road (lovely smooth tarmac) nearly caught me out this morning  - front wheel stepped out, but luckily held it upright :D - scary

I nearly rode into the back of a van this morning. I was riding in traffic and could see it was slowing down ahead, so I looked over my shoulder to check it was safe to move out and overtake. When I looked forward again the traffic was slowing down rather more than I had anticipated, so a quick wiggle was required to move out and avoid an embarrasing "face into back window" incident.

The red lines are my nemesis. I've had a number of nasty run-ins with them
