The Stranglers - Black and White. Still play it today.

Me too - either the black side or the white side, to suit my mood

'she was quit close to meeeeee' ah quality, I went to see them at the Roundhouse last November as part of the 30th year anniversary, great night, just shame Hugh didn't turn up to bring back the good old days.
Most prized vinyls are Blue Monday in the original 'floppy' sleeve that nearly bankrupted their record company. They lost £££ on every one sold.

One of the unusual ones I've got is blue as well  .
A Megadeath (I know, I know  ) 12" that's on blue vinyl but plays back to front. You put the needle in the centre and it works its way out to the edge as it plays.

Ok you asked for it - my first single was purchased from a music shop in Addiscombe by the side of the railway bridge that is no longer there and it was...

Benny Hill - The fastest milkfloat in the west

Well - someone had to!!

I think the first one I bought was "Imagine" by John Lennon. It was in the chart for ages after his murder. "Working Class Hero" was on the B-side - which had some bad language in it. Just as well my Mum didn't notice.

Around the same time, I also bought "I Surrender" by Rainbow - a bit of Hard Rock to contrast completely with Lennon's hippy love/peace stuff. Just listening to it again on last.fm - think I'll have to get a copy for my iPod....

I think I knew that record shop - they only had vinyle didn't they?

Saw H. Cornwell on a showcase in Borders a few years ago, he was good.
1st single: Remember you're a Womble/Bungo's Birthday, by The Wombles.

Excellent, my brother still has the original Wombles album. Apparently he was the envy of his friends and used to strut along to all the parties with it tucked under his arm  .

PVT - Is The Vinyl Resting Place still on your road? Opposite the garage.

Beanos used to be great for old vinyl but went downhill quickly when they moved to the new site, became too commercial, ditched nearly everything for CDs and prices practically doubled.

Truly a gimmick worthy of Satan himself

Actually I just thought of an earlier single I bought - marco you would be proud of me:

1984 - "Hip-hop" by Sidney. He had the first rap tv program in the world!

I was 10 and we were all trying to do that move on your head

I was 7 when I bought The Lion Sleeps Tonight, I don't think I was aiming to buy something that would still be seen as cool when I was in my 30s  .
I do still have that original purchase though, think I've still got the Sputnik tape as well although I fear Joe Dolce has vanished.

THe first record I was bought was a 7" from Woolies. It had a photo of some teddy bears on the front and about four songs on it, The Osmonds and "Do you want to be in my gang" by Garry Glitter, very dodgy!
First single I bought myself was Ghost town and the first album was Madness 7.
The first album I ever had though was The Bay City Rollers.

I must admit that I am very concerned by the number of people who bought the Pet Shop Boys as one of their first ever singles. Joe Dollcie is also a very serious crime against good musical taste. My brother bought Vienna by Ultravox - which I think had the longest ever run at number 2. It was held off the top spot by Joe Dollcie.

It could be worse though - someone could have 'fessed-up to owning some Shaking Stevens or even Chesney Hawkes. That must be a capital offence....
