Jimbo - Whitten Timber???

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:32 pm

Fantastic ride today (Sunday). beautiful weather (it's February - global warming - we're all doomed)

Met up at West Wickham @ 10 (Simon O, Paul, Sam and me). Rode up through Beddlestead, down to Westerham, back up via Star Hill (hard) , through Cudham, another climb and back home via Biggin Hill.

63 kms door to door, 706 m of climb, 3% ave climb, max 12% - 14 mph average glorious. :D

Anyway, we met up with a couple of riders and had a chat. One was a bit of a character: 'Jimbo', black bloke riding in Whitten Timber colours, he knows Joyce, he was a big road racer in his day, won't use cleats and still uses toe straps.

Anyone know who he is? Just interested.
Cheers

Sounds like a guy that I knew for a long time riding at Herne Hill, known colloquially as "Jungle Jim".

He was hilarious when they had a "devil take the hindmost", being repeatedly called out, but making out he was variously, deaf, blind, didn't know his number, etc etc

Jim still does the Herne Hill league on Mondays and Wednesdays (which his company sponsors).
He's definitely a character, and not a bad rider (well over the shorter distances at least).

He never introduced him to me as "Jungle Jim" neither did I hear anyone call him by that name last season.

Paul are you referring to the days when your average club cyclist's favourite TV show was a toss up between Rising Damp and Love Thy Neighbour ??

Of course that was a few years ago, but he used to call himself that, so no offense given or taken.
