Saturday's Plan - CR

Postby Andrew G » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:57 pm

“B” Training Group
Due to the full on Training Group containing strong 2nd Cat riders, and trying to hang on to their wheels when they gallop up the Gatton triple at 30mph being about as easy as nailing jelly to the wall – one handed, we’ll kick off this on Saturday.

Basically for anyone new(ish) to racing, wants to have a go at racing this year, or just wants a hard training ride. Pace will be pretty rapid obviously but not as blue-arsed as the full on training group, and likely to be more varied than one steady pace in two nice neat lines.

Club Run route in reverse heading up Chipstead Valley to Box Hill first, then back through the lanes to Partridge before going through Rusper and on to a thru n’ off on the dual carriageway.

Speed: An unknown as the pace is unlikely to be constant, also have no idea how doing the CR this way round will change it – that’s part of the experiment so we can feedback to Monty about the possibility of other groups reversing the CR from time to time if it will help stagger the café arrival times. Probably 19s people upwards, but that includes those who’ve been shirking in the 18s when they should have moved to the 19s ages ago (mentioning no names :D ).

If you said you were up for this in the other post I know who you are so on Saturday no hiding under your comfort blanket (18s). As one eloquent member said [quote]I'd like to try a faster group, if only to push my envelope and step out of my comfort zone and see how many other meaningless management consultant cliches I can use to delineate my rider profile outside the box
 .

of course the only trouble with doing the CR in reverse is there's no longer the option for those of us that get dropped to join up with a later group.

I think i'm washing my hair :)

No; i'm interested - by going the other way and having no groups behind to drop into it should encourage people to not get dropped ;)

Andrew - would this mean climbing box hill first? going down in? Is it going to be the reverse including box hill or the straight run home?

Looking forward to it

Cheers

Im going to see how I feel on the day. I may not even be out for a normal club run due to 2 reasons, one, Im still quite sore and my necks still suffering and two, the misses is back from skiing at dinner time on sat so may have to do an airport run to pick her up.

No problem, we won't drop anyone.
If you go through a bad spell or are suffering then shout out and we'll ease off or ride tempo for a while so you can recover. Riding on the front or attacking on a hill is not compulsory, if you are finding it tough practice sucking wheels and doing no work for a while :) . Races will be tough without a backup group so you may well need to push yourself a bit more than you do normally, but that is part of the exercise with a training ride. Like I say though we won't abandon anyone.

In reverse there would be no climb of Box Hill but we could always have a race up it once we've gone down it before continuing  .

From the cafe I was thinking of continuing in reverse so we would do the out leg of a normal CR backwards and then drop down the Gatton triple before picking up the Merstham drag, this would include the nasty climb early on (10%ish) back up to Rusper that you normally go down at speed. There is the option of course of going back the normal Redhill route or back where you've come from via Box Hill if you're missing people you want a chat to. The run back would be similar to a normal CR in that you just ride as a group but we should still keep the pace fairly high. This could also give an alternative option to those that came out on a normal CR but want to do a different route back, like I said in the other post doing a route in reverse completely changes it.

Ant - Don't push yourself too early, if you're still feeling the effects from the crash then wait until you've recovered properly if need be, I'm hoping this group won't be a one off but become a regular weekly thing whether I'm there or poncing about on a dual carriageway somewhere (TTing).

Well ordinarily I'd love to. Trouble is y'see I'm doing the ES Hardriders on Sunday so I'm on a very specific coaching regime this week - no leg rippage this Saturday for me

 .Great Idea Andrew; last year on a 19's 'gettingready2race' ride taken by myself and Huw ride the group pushed the pace thru and off stylee (slow riders sat on) and I assured people we'd ease off for 5-10mins every 20-25mins. It worked really well, nobody got dropped. I think once people knew it was only gonna be close to race pace just for 20 minute chunks it got everyone psyched up. IIRC an unfit only Robbie managed to stay with us most of the way before turning off at the cafe. It was a kinda 4/5/6 x 20 interval workout in a group :D . Just make sure you announce what's gonna happen before the ride starts so that everyone know's the score.

I don't have any plans to do things by timed slots as such, just base it on how people feel and take it from there, but will make sure that we don't shed or split without recovery sections (probably for me :) ). As you say it's that first foray in to riding at a race pace (or close to) for some, which unfortunately will probably mean myself (and with a bit of luck someone else who's raced before) doing the first few stints on the front. Most people know what they're doing and have done thru n' offs so it shouldn't take long before they're all tanking along merrily and I can just start sucking wheels :D .

I might give this a go - depends how hung over I'll be. Are you starting at any particular time or shall I turn up at my usual time?

Normal CR time. I think we'll probably be 2nd off after the big boys training group, except we're heading off in a different direction.
