well it was a big field today, and we had a number of acc-ers out.

paul T, marek, george, sylv, dan gee, hal and myself.

on the first lap i attacked because i knew i needed to warm up a bit. to my pleasant surprise sylv came with me, and a dynamo rider. me and sylv started working but the dynamo was doing nothing, then dave kennett came over, but also didnt do anything. i think paragon were just covering the breaks. we stayed away for just under a lap before we got sucked in.

i felt warmed up, but perhaps a little too warmed up! i took a rest in the pack for a lap and a half, then i went up to the front 20 to join sylv and george. whilst i had been hiding a break of about 10 had gone clear. george was sitting on the front so i thought id go help. i casually went in front of him to help, but he had other ideas for me, and let me open up a gap. i looked back and had 25m , and the break was about 350m ahead. i put my head down and started trying to bridge the gap. slowly it was coming down, and by the top of a small hill i only had 50m to go, but i was suffering, even the motor bike out rider was encouraging me. i knew i only needed one more effort to get on.....then all of a sudden we turned a corner and into a nasty headwind. suddenly i was no longer closing the gap, in fact in was slowly increasing. i looked back and i had about 250m on the peleton. i knew i was not going to get onto the break so i sat up, and thankfully by the time i was bought back in i had recovered.

i sat in again for a lap, and then went back to the front with sylv and george. marek then did what i had done and went after the break, a sigma sports rider went after him, but they both got bought back in. by now there was 3 laps to go, about 21 miles. first call of duty was to help bring back the break. i got up the front and we got a through and off going and soon roped them in.

now the attacks came in think and fast and i lost count of how many break aways myself, sylv and george got into. we would establish one, but no one would be willing to work and we would get roped in. with 2.5 laps to go a promising break went. george was in it so i knew i shouldnt chase after it in case i towed the pack. thankfully somone else went after it and i covered his move, and soon we had bridged it over to the break. there were about 15 riders in it, probably too many as it was not smooth. me and george did a fair bit of work- george more than anyone. with 1.5 laps to go we had been chased down. i then made a big mistake....

i let myself drift back too far, and a break went with sylv and george chasing. it was so tempting to go after them but i played the good team mate and just covered other moves, and sat on the front. george managed to get across but sylv was cooked and was back in the pack. i knew i should of, and could of gone with the break but it was too late, and at least george was in. me and sylv sat about 15 places back for the last lap, and discussed if we were going to attack on the climb, but we didnt do it in the end.

up the finishing slope there was a fair bit of jostleing around for the remaining places which i didnt think was worth the risk, as about 10 people were in the break, so i just rode behind the 6 or 7 sprinters making sure i would avoid any crashes. i think i finished top 25 or so, george finished 9th, marek was just behind me, and sylv just behind him. so i think the all 4 of us were inside the top 30. unfortunately paul T, dan gee and hal got dropped (lack of training group over winter) .

the race was 53 miles roughly, but i didnt get the average speed as my speedo stopped working in the rain :(

cheers

Stu I didn't clock you at all during the race!! I came and watched with my kids for a few laps and it was good to see the Agreeables in action. We left just with 3 laps to go as my children were getting bored despite have their DS' with them.

Well done to you all. We followed the race for a lap and the speeds seemed to go from 20mph up to about 35mph quite easily and on quite a blustery day.

Two classic quotes from my children "Dad why don't you do proper racing like that" and "Is Lance Armstrong going to be there?" :D

Nice write up Stu and sounds like a good race for the Agreeables with George, Sylv, and yourself all having good ones and making sure you'd get in a few photos  - tongues out?

Paul said last week he doesn't know why he does this race as he's never fit for it, but it's become his traditional season opener  .

Dropped or not, well done to Dan and Hal in your first (I think) Surrey League races. Proper roads and a 50 mile race are certainly a step up from Palace or Hillingdon.

Good write up Stu :D
All I can ad to this is my view of the race.

Drove down with Paul T, Sylv and Stu in the team van, we were quite lucky with the weather, I thought it was gonna absoloutly tip it down but fortunatley there was just a slight bit of drizzle and the roads stayed fairly safe and not too slippery.

Sat very close to the front for the duration of the race, this way you can tell what is going on and who has gone off the front and who's going well.

I was playing a waiting game today I said to myself I wasn't going to attack until half distance, as I thought all the ones before would get swallowed up.

I went for a couple of digs half way through at about 95% effort but everyone managed to klatch onto my wheels so I waited a little longer.

There was a 4 man break up the road from lap 2 and they had just over a minute so it could have been possible to get to them with some pain and suffering.

With just over 2 laps to go 4 guys went off the front, Dave K, John Heaton Armstrong, Sigma man and another, we let them get 30 secs or so then a few more of us got ahead then Sylv had a charge so let him go a bit then gave it 100% to get away, we did get away and as I came past Sylv expected him to jump on my wheel, but I think I must have been going too strong Sylv couldn't quite hold my wheel

I worked hard and could see the 4 man break ahead and I wanted to be in it, I ground out a hard pace and after nearly half a lap latched on. Few I was in the break, then we just basically just had a really fast through and off untill the final couple of miles, there was no chance we were gonna get caught as we were well out of sight.

John was super strong, for a little while it was just him and me taking all the turns, he could see I was feeling it a bit so told me to latch on the back so thats what i did for a couple of turns.

We could see the 4 riders in the leading breakaway just ahead and were catching them fast, I was convinced we would get them befor the line but no they managed to hold us 5 off just.

With 1k to go I went for it full tilt, but they weren't letting me get away with it that easy so now I was leading out a sprint :o didn't quite have the legs for a sprint but flew over the line for 9th place from the break.

Well, my first race this year back in yellow and black and it went as well as I thought it could. Had been away all week on a conference, which basically meant no training, except in the bar and not much sleep. Also seemd to have picked up a sore throat so was half tempted not to show up today, but happy I did.

Was great to see George, Sylv and Stu having the odd dig now and then and George getting away at the end put the icing on the cake which is great.

I had one forray off the front to try and catch a break, but my tank was not as full as usual, and although I got a good gap for about half a lap, I did not have enough to get up to the break which was a shame.

After that I just sat in and watched the race unfold from the safety of the middle of the pack. Didn't have much left for the finish, the wind in some places on the course was punishing as it was coming diagonally from the sides, so people were having to ride on the other side of the road, something I don't like doing very much. It was either ride on other side of road or get battered by the wind, I took a fair amount of battering.

On one part of the course a tractor was cutting back hedges and there were a few large pieces of wood flying out onto the road, saw a couple of dodgy moments when people would hit a big piece of wood and it would knock them about a bit, but thankfully I think the whole race went very smooth and I did not see any dodgy riding which is nice.

Overall am happy considering my build up, hope the others who did not finish enjoyed what they sat through, it only gets easier the more you do, so don't worry too much, it is the first of the year.

See you next week for Dunsfold if this cold does not develop too much.

Cheers

Marek....

I used to think that looking back was like a giveaway that you are suffering, but I think I have to do it a bit more ... up the climb I didn't realise no-one was coming with me chasing, so I gave it all expecting someone to come through to the front soon ... looked back as it wasn't happening, the bunch was about 100m back! Panick, what do I do, the group ahead is only about 60m away, so I keep going but the more I am climbing the more I am wobbling, look back they are still far, maybe if the guys up front let a bit of steam down on the long descent I can get back to them ... look back again oh great George is coming up on his own ... not too long now ooooooooohhhh noooo he is going much too fast for me to latch onto his wheel.

For a second I contemplate shouting "wait for meeeeeeeee" but think of the shame of doing that, I hammer it down the hill but so is the group ahead, there's a couple bends so maybe I can make up some ground, but no they are moving away and when I look back the bunch is almost there, better ease up a few seconds so I can up the pace when they come past just before that nasty hill ... ahhhh it's fast, now my only hope is not to get dropped, just about managed it then recovered a bit for the last lap, was almost hoping someone would attack up the hill to follow them, but it didn't happen, and on the long sprint for which I was well positioned I just died again and let everyone past me ...

Lesson learnt though about looking back! (thinking of getting one of those bar-plug mirrors again too) Well done George Stu and Marek (and Hal Paul and Dan that wasn't an easy race)

Hey well done fellas I've been off the bike all week for various reason so I decided training rather than racing would be better for my fragile ego. I'll definitley make it for the JBS road race at the end of the month. Well in summary thats wasn't a bad showing by the A team. We got our strongest rider in the decisive break which shows tactically we were on the money. Hey George it sounds like John HA is riding well. Is he riding for the Mozzies this year?

Yes, feel a bit sorry about him being the only mozzie in the last couple races, as he is very strong - great turn of speed when attacking too. Not sure if he got 3rd or 4th place, he was happy about it.

Well done guys riding really well this year.

This is a write up from the other end of the field. I was looking forward to this my first road race, on roads that I have ridden since I was a kid, a bit nervous but a nice quiet ride down to the start and the drizzle was holding off. Met up with the team van and started off. The neutral zone was fine. The first half lap was not too bad, a bit of bunching around the corners and some effort to catch up. For the next lap I seemed to be slowly going backwards convincing myself that when I was warmed up I would move up to the front. The second time up the slight drag I was hanging on for dear life, I passed Dan looking good but like me not moving forward through the pack either.

Then near the end of the second lap looked behind me to see there was only one person behind me and a gap was opening up in front. :|

Luckly Paul T was in a similar position and we rode the next few laps pretty quick in an organised two up. I was convincing myself that I was in a break and I had to ride hard to stay clear :D . Then with still 2 laps to go I started to feel the pain. My back was killing me from riding down on the drops and I was loosing power fast. Paul was riding really strong and steady and the through and off turned into Paul towing me the whole of the last lap while I was out the saddle hammering it just to keep his wheel, thanks for waiting. I was dead when we finished our 7 (out of 8 ) laps. We were only about 2 minutes ahead of the leaders so got to watch the finish from my position colapsed on the floor.

I had 46 miles at ave of 21.4mph

Definately too early in the season for me without those winter training group sessions, but a great experiance.

Thanks also to Paul H for the lift home I dont think I could have faced riding back up chalk pit hill.

The 2/3 rather than the 3rd cat option was always gonna tough especially without race pace training. Well done anyway mate, its very eary days so nothing to worry about :D

Sylv I thought you were on my wheel, my necks a bit stiff and I couldn't turn round to see you honest guv

Stu I'm sure you were strong enough for a break, but in road racing it's a bit of luck where you happen to be, it's a bit of in the right place at the right time.

I personally hate sitting in the bunch and would try anything to get away in the break, sometimes its just a bit of luck as well.
