gorrick 3 09/03

Two of us who were racing on Saturday had the good (?) idea of racing again today, I did the Gorrick mtb race near Bagshot. (you will find out who the other one was soon ...)

Did all the right things after the road race (food and protein drink just after, cold/hot shower massage, legs up, early night - not as early as I'd hoped though due to repeated visits to the restroom for number ones (am I the only one who gets this in the hours after a race?), so my legs weren't too bad to begin with. Got a good start in about 4th into the singletrack, passing Scott the current series leader who'd stopped to fiddle with his chain - didn't take him long to catch up though, he was behind me in a narrow section and encouraging me like a coach, to keep going, come on harder harder, it's Paul Lazenby just in front, come on get back to him ... as soon as he could he came past and I never saw him again.

Halfway through the first of four laps, my seatpost started to slip down. Oh perfect just what I need with tired legs, something to knacker them even more! I thought about stopping at the finish to ask for a tool, but just decided to carry on regardless. Jeez that really messed up my knees, especially the right one, it is still painful despite the Deep Heat - saddle went down by about two inches, it felt like I was riding a jump bike. I had tightened the carbon post as much as I thought was safely possible, so I think I will go back to a metallic one ...

The climbs were ok as I'd get out of the saddle in a singlespeed style, but the fast flat sections were painful, especially the rooty muddy ones where your extended legs usually absorb the bumps, sometimes I just had to get in the big ring and stand up, but it was tiring. I was getting slower and slower then got caught by a couple of riders, including Oli on his singlespeed, so we had a good fight together, I made the most of a fast downhill section towards the end to gain a few tens of meters, he was back behind me right at the end but with no place to overtake, finishing in my wheel.

Don't think I would have done better than 5th without the mishap and tired legs. I think I safely secured my place up the leader board in the tongue-out league today though ...

I wouldn't want to be racing both weekend days like this every week, not every month in fact (not talking of stage races where everyone is in the same boat). All I seemed to have been doing for two days is sleeping, eating, resting, and racing. Looking forward to the working week ... (not)

Unlucky Sylv, sounds like you had a tough time of it. I've never had an issue with carbon posts. Perhaps your clamp slightly cracked or something? I have had that before!

Good effort to carry on and get a decent placing though!

Good advice Dr Toks, I have a Camelback pouch in the freezer that will make the perfect ice-pack.
