Turbo tyres

Postby jon avery » Mon Mar 10, 2008 2:48 pm

Spoke to my Doc today and she said it is ok to go on my turbo trainer as long as i don't over do it, what i want to know is when i bought my turbo i was told i had to buy a special tyre to use on the turbo. Do you really need to put this on? Or is it ok with a normal tyre?

You don't need a "turbo tyre" just take off your good tyres and out an old one on as the turbo will knacker it quite quickly (it wears a nice shiney flat section in the middle).

normal tyre will be fine Jon, I even use my race wheels with disc on my tt bike, mind you the elite turbo has a larger rubber elastomer roller wheel.

If you have a spare wheel (I did) you may as well get a turbo tyre to put on it. I found the turbo tyre seemed slightly quieter and perhaps it's just aesthetic but the road tyre was leaving marks on the roller.

In my limited use of turbos, I used one in our dining room which had a cream carpet at the time, and afterwards it was a polka dot effect, covered in tiny pieces of rubber that had heated up enough to melt from them tyre and cold enough to stick stubbornly to the carpet afterwards  ..........Mrs T was not best pleased.

Be warned.
