weather for herne Hill good friday

Postby kieran » Fri Mar 14, 2008 3:41 pm

Met office:
After a frosty start across England and Wales on Wednesday, outbreaks of rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland will spread southeastwards. Snow is likely over northern hills. This will clear southwards later Wednesday and during Thursday to allow several cold and showery days for all areas, lasting through the Easter weekend. Showers are likely to be heavy and prolonged at times and will be wintry, especially over northern hills where some accumulations of snow are likely. However, some drier and sunnier interludes are to be expected for the west and southwest. It will be windy, especially in the north and east, but will be frosty at night in shelter. During next week, little change is expected with cool north or northwesterly winds and a mixture of sunshine and wintry showers.

Yesterday we had Paris-Roubaix conditions, next week for the Easter three day...

Liege-Bastogne-Liege conditions, from Bernard Hinault's year!

Very subdued outfit for him, I expect the pink blazer was hanging on the back of a chair somewhere.

Will this still go ahead if the weather is bad?

They always try to make sure it happens.

No racing if the track is wet or icy, but if there are only showers then it drains and dries out pretty quickly. If they need to cut events then they either drop some of the placing (5-8) sprint finals or can probably increase the sprints to a 6 up rather than a 4 up in the heats to cut out a round. They can get through stuff pretty quickly if need be though and will always try to ensure that the big event - Stayers (big motorbike paced) race and 10 minute pursuit will go ahead.

At the moment metcheck is saying light rain at 12 but dry and cloudy either side of it so I'd expect if it stays that way to get the majority of the programme run (unless the light rain just stays around for hours). A couple of years ago it was like a monsoon at noon but they still got the racing on from about 2-3pm I think and got through everything.

The main programme (sprint heats at 11am) doesn't start until 1pm anyway so hopefully it should be fine - think positive my friend :D .

I'll be going (probably driving) after lunch and get there about 1 or just after. If it's raining or they're waiting for the track to dry then you can always have a drink while you wait.

Does anyone else have any plans?

well, a successful day at the track, the full schedule of events went ahead. It was my coldest day ever at herne hill, with a cutting wind but at least the rain kept away until we got home and then lightening and giant hailstones!! they were so lucky. Some good races to watch as well.

They were but I think they must have known it was on its way as they rattled through the events quite quickly. A good day though.

Just wondered what people thought of the £12 entry fee. Mrs A and I swung by that way, minded to have a butcher's at proceedings for an hour or so before going on our way. I didn't expect to get in for nish, but £24 for the two of us seemed pretty steep to me. Am I being unreasonable?

There's obviously a minimum cost for the organiser in putting on the event, but I don't think it is too much. It's a fair point that if you are dropping by for an hour or so then it is a bit pricey, but most people go for the day. It was a bit more rushed than normal this year as the weather was due to (and did) turn rubbish but they managed to get through before the hail arrived.

It does put a completely different slant on it when the sun is out, it's warm, and you have a nice day out. Easter being so early caused a few problems with the weather, but also there was no star names there as there normally is. Due to when Good Friday was in relation to Milan San Remo and the World Track Champs they never were going to be this year though.
