Dunsfold 2/3 ACC goes nuts!!!

Postby Marek » Sun Mar 16, 2008 8:28 pm

Well, a fantastic day for a 110km ride around the lanes of Surrey. A bit windy, raining a lot and lots of fast riders about. Paul, George, Stu, Sylv and myself were entered for this fanciful foray of utter madness. I spoke to quite a few riders prior to the race and they were all very downbeat, so I gave it the 'its a good day to get points today', which they looked at me as if I was mad.

As we came out of the short neutralised section onto a smallish hill on the course a London Dynamo rider had pinged off the front, and then to my surprise Paul H was in hot pursuit. Utter madness, this was the start, so I pinged up with them and started a through and off.

Half a lap gone and we were pulling out a good lead, then another couple of really strong riders joined our group. We kept on pushing away and we had a really good gap. A couple of riders in our group were very strong, a guy from Medway Velo was shouting at us all to work hard and a guy from Kingston Wheelers was also doing good strong turns. After a few laps of this madness I have to admit that I went through a bad patch. I got dropped. Nightmare, I could see this nice little group ahead with Paul H in and I could do nothing. But then about a minute later 3 other riders came flying along up to me, led by a really strong Sigma Sport rider on a Cervelo Soloist SL. Well, not one to give up easily I decided to try again and latched onto this little group.

Before long I felt a bit better and started taking turns on the flatter sections, the Sigma guy was a monster he was really doing most of the work. Then within about 15 minutes we were gaining on the earlier break, fantastic. Then we caught them, hello Paul I'm back.

Now we had a group of about 10 and it was all going quite well, but the Medway Velo guy did not like people sitting on and he attacked every now and then. When he did this it was really painful and hard to stay on. At one point he went with the Sigma, Kingston and another guy and they got a good gap on the rest of us. I came past Paul H and said I would pull him back on. I gave it everything and managed to get back onto the group of 5 now, but looked around and Paul was long gone as were another couple of riders I think.

I then sat on the back of this uber strong group doing the odd turn but trying not to do too much as it was far too fast for me with the distance we still had left. The Medway guy eventually had enough and he put in another searing attack, we still had about 4 laps to go, but that was me done, I was dropped.

Ok, I thought I will try and keep up a reasonable tempo and see if I can get to the finish before getting caught. I did a lap on my own and it was really hard work and now I was starting to really suffer on the drags, hitting speeds of 25kmph is not great when you think you have a pack of wolves chasing you down. While cycling around on my own I was saddened to see the Medway Velo guy cycling back the other way, think he punctured, ah well, wish it had happened earlier as I reckon I could have stayed with a smooth functioning group.

Anyway, then a group of 5 other riders catch me up including Paul H. They were not going that quick which was great so I latched onto them doing the odd turn, but trying to save my energy, I had been dropped from groups twice already did not want it to happen again.

Onto the last lap and we were well ahead of the pack, we could not see them at all. Then it was just a bit of cat and mouse towards the finish. I had a go at attacking down the hill before the finish, but did not have the legs. This put me on the front just before the drag towards the final hill. Not great. Anyway, I slowed right up and we had a bit of cat and mouse.

Onto the final hill and it was just a case of survival. My legs were absolutely screwed, I could not feel my feet due to the cold from the rain and no feet warmers (mistake). I was keeping up just about on the bottom of the hill, but then as we approached the top my legs gave way and it was jelly wobbles all over the place. I rolled over the line just after Paul H in 10th place.

That was the hardest race I have ever done, I am happy to get my first ever points in a 2nd cat race, but it was seriously hard work. Paul, can we wait until half way through the race to break next time please :?:

Think Stu won the bunch sprint, so we will have 3 riders with points today. Sylv punctured and George blew, too much riding about on his own in the morning.

Cheers

Marek.....

marek, paul- what an amazing break away. i should have gone with it, but as we were only 200m into the race i thought it would just be a waste of time

well my race was not as exciting. once the break had gone i made sure i stayed off the front, and i only went with attacks, and didnt create any.

a couple of laps in and another break of about 6 went and got a couple of hundred metres. there were 2 other people at about 100m and then dave kennett at about 50m. i sprang out from the group and quickley bridged it to dave, rested for about 10 seconds then took a turn on the front that lasted until i had bridged the gap to the other 2 riders. i dont think dave got onto my wheel, it was the last time i saw him  .

as i got onto the back of the other 2 guys i was pretty nackered, another rider came up, i think he was on my wheel or something. we could see the group ahead but they were going at it pretty hard. we started a through and off and after a few miles we managed to get onto the back of them. the break lasted about a lap but then we got dragged back in. i dont think the peleton was willing to let that many people get away.

there were about 6 laps to go by now, and although i was bitterly disappointed about not getting into the break, it was nice knowing all i was expected to do was just sit in on the bunch for the rest of the race until the finish.

i stayed in the top 3-10 places 95% of the time as i wanted to get a reasonable work out from it. i went with most of the attacks, and took the odd turn on the front just to keep warm and get the blood rushing. by now, with about 4 laps to go the peleton was dwindling with only about 25 people left.

with about 3 laps to go the break had a gap of around 4 minutes. i think it was so successful because it had people in it from a variety of teams which meant there was no effort to chase it down. most of the time we were just cruising because so many teams had men up the road. so we all came to a consensus to start doing a steady through and off to keep warm and get to the finish sooner, as it was pretty grim out there. once we started this the break aways lead over us stayed the same. it was nice to do this as it really warmed me up, as i was feeling pretty chilled.

with 1.5 laps to go we stopped the through and off pretty much, because we could see some dropped breakaway riders about 400m ahead. however john heaton-armstrrong had no one up the road and managed to pretty much single handedly chase these 2 down, by doing a monster of a turn on the front. he did ask me to help, but i couldnt be sure one of the riders was not marek or paul so i couldnt. i felt pretty guilty though as he was chasing all alone.

with one lap to go the peleton now had only about 15-20 riders left in it. i was feeling strong and decided that with a couple of miles to go i would go for a long one. so thats what i did. i got about 150m off the front and was fairly comfortable, and was confident i could stay the distants, but then my old friend mister cramp kicked in on my left hamstring. i pulled over to the side of the road and gave it a good massage while the pack caught me back up, and i quickly jumped back onto them. i now just used my left leg until the finish to make sure it didnt come back  . with about a mile to go we bought back in a guy that had gone off the front just after me. he was so exhausted that he slupmped over his bars, lost control, went onto the grass and then fell into a ditch  . it looked pretty funny, and i dont think he would have been hurt from it.

as we hit the finishing hill i was right at the back of the pack. i knew the finish was only about 300m away so i attacked up the outside and managed to get a gap on the pack. at the top i could see sylv and george cheering , and i thought it was the finishing line. as i got closer i realised they were saying keep going. as i got level with them i then saw that the finish was another 150m away  . i looked back and had about 10m or so on the next guy chasing me, so i put my head down and just rode as hard as i could for the line. but with 50m to go i got cramp again, but there was no way i was going to let up so i just kept hammering it. i stopped just after the line to massage it out. so although i missed the break, i managed to get the bunch sprint at least, coming in 11th- so still in the points.

i felt fine pretty much all the race. it was the longest one i have done so far at 65 odd miles. anyone know the average speed as my speedo stopped working?

cheers
stu

Really exciting reports, and a great race Marek and Paul up in the break from the gun  . Nice one Stu getting the bunch sprint.

Shame about the puncture Sylv, unlucky George maybe doing 21 miles on a tough circuit at 23mph in the wind and rain was a bit too much of a warm up.

First of all well done guys!

Cramp & speedo stopped working is getting to be a common thing Stu? Might be worth having an electrolyte drink with you in case your sweating too much salts.

Astounding work guys (not just on the reports), good to hear that was your hardest race Marek, you look positively shot going up the final climb, and I didn't think I'd read a report of your until Monday :)

Punctured 40 minutes in, halfway round the lap so walked for 40 minutes getting colder and colder, till a kind soul who was riding the course in reverse (John from Hemel Hampstead) offered to fetch his car at the HQ and give me a lift, on the way found another punctured rider from the USA who got a lift back too. Don't think i've ever been that cold, stood under the hand-dryer at the HQ for ten minutes, but still had shivers two hours later, despite spending half an hour in George's overheated van driving the course in reverse and cheering on the 3 ACCers from the window.

At least I know I wouldn't have been up to any good today, have had crap legs all week, but would have liked to see if I could finish this war of attrition as George rightly put it. It really did look that hard from the outside.

I wish I'd had my camera as Paul's face at the finish was comical, like a Roubaix rider. Well done to you and Marek, and Stu for hanging in there right till the end.

I guess that's you Stu as I can just about make out a red bike and it's too small for Marek. Great picture, I see what you meant by looking like you'd all ridden P-R now, clearly proof of great wheel sucking exploits  .

Those lanes must have been caked in rubbish, the TT was hardly on clean roads yet even the back of my shorts/jersey weren't too bad.

Rocked up at the HQ in Dunsfold and met a very dirty and knackered looking Paul T and Matt D, Adam was happy with his podium placing in the 3rds race which had just finished.

In the HQ the commisionaire announced that it was 10 laps of the course, which was pretty mega, a few peoples jaws dropped when he said that I can tell you.
Straight away from the start we saw Marek go off on one of his trademark early moves, Paul H latched on and little did we know that was the last we were gonna see of them, 100km in a breakaway( good lads!!)

Stu, Sylv and myself were nestled in the pack, it was fast twitchy and grim with all the sh1t and spray coming up from the road, it really was a proper classic type race.

My legs were feeling a little heavy to say the least after giving everything in the TT earlier in the morning, I found it more difficult to react to the constant changes in pace with all the out of the saddle accelerations.

After 4 laps Sylv punctured and then on the next lap I was getting near the back of the pack, I had some good company too with Dave K and Guy Powdrill. I must have drunk too much water to try and recover from the morning and I was totally dying for a jimmy riddle, I didn't know what to do I tried to go whilst riding but, my valve wasn't opening
I pulled up quickly and releived myself, this was just at the point when Dave and Guy along with Lawrence from Kingston wheelers were dropped, I latched back on to them but was suprised to see Guy and Dave turn right for an early shower

Naturally I carried on and Lawrence and I continued alone in the cold wet conditions, we treated it as a training ride and didn't let up but it was a lost cause to get back on the the peloton who were already chasing 2 breakaway groups. We had a right laugh together through and offing, he was an animal (ex marine) so together no one wanted to pack in.

End of the next lap we again turned letft for some more training, Lawrence was weakening here and I pretty much had to tow him round alon, which I wasn't complaining about, I quite enjoyed the suffering, we were being cheered on by the spectators, with 3 laps to go we both decided that we had done our bit and turned right at the junction.

Back at the HQ it was a sorry tale of cold wet riders who had been beaten by the conditions, Phil S was shivering in the corner next to the radiator, a quick cuppa and Sylv and I jumped ito the team bus to drive round and cheer on Paul Marek and Stu.

Back up at the finish a group of 4 strong riders had pulled away from Paul and Marek, but even they had split into 2 groups with the hard nuts pulling ahead by a minute, couple of mins later the group containg Paul and Marek came up the hill to the finish, Mareks face was so funny, well h didn't look very happy at all :o I think they had both exerted themselfs to the max and I was well proud that they had initiated the descisive break of the race and stayed away from the bunch of wolfs.

A couple of minutes later the group were ding donging up the hill,Sylv and I could see Stu coming round the outside, he was easily the strongest of the bunch and got a good gap to take the bunch sprint, well done Stu, I'm sure he would have been strong enough for the break but was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, Paul and Stu's faces were so black with drirt it was hilarious.

The TT in the morning had taken a bit out my legs, I felt like Nazi Germany today trying to fight a war on 2 fronts

Well done guy's that was a hard day indeed.
