Club Run this Sat 22/03

Don't forget that both cafes (Coulsdon and Charlwood) are shut this weekend :( and it is looking to be a bit chilly.

How about a club run with a cafe stop at boxhill - any ideas of a good route, and would everyone be interested?

if it is going to be a bit chilly best just bring some food to eat on the bike and keep riding then anyway so you don't cool down and then freeze when starting off again.

Thanks Sean  .
Had a look at the long range forcast for Monday (got a TT) and the forecast says:
Temp: -4
Feels like: -12
Wind: 16-20mph  (although has to be behind at some point as it's a circuit).
Have a feeling I won't be in shorts for this one.

Steve - What's happened before has been to do the normal route to Newdigate and then turn right to pick up the Box route. Alternatively you could do the CR in full but just continue through Charlwood and on to Box.

Some groups could always do a different ride completely. Form a queue eh Ian.

I think the Box Hill cafe idea is a good one (if we have large numbers we could split - some going to Rykers, and some to the National Trust cafe at the top of the hill).

Suggested route (a simple one so everybody can follow it):
Normal club run route to Newdigate.
Turn right.
Normal "Box Hill return" route to the top of Box Hill.
Stop.
Eat cake.
Eat more cake.
Blast along the top of Box Hill.
(Turn left through Walton on the Hill to avoid the camel humps).
Straight on at the roundabout to Kingswood.
Turn right at the station.
Straight on rather than left through the "posh estate"
Chipstead Valley.
Home.

I think straight on. Others think through the estate. Our expeiment the other week was inconclusive 'cos of a puncture in the estate.

With straight on, you get to climb for about another 100m after the junction (slower), but then it's downhill all the way to the convergence of the two routes and a better run in to the small climb before Chipstead Valley ie. you don't have to stop at the junction if there's traffic coming, or brake before the junction to "run it safely."

The distances look about the same on the map so, if we do this route on Saturday, why don't we rerun the experiment?

I'm with you Grahame, I think straight on's quicker. I thought we only went through the estate as the road surface used to be terrible on the main road, now it's nice and smooth.

Of course Nick always calls it the "Swinger's estate" so maybe that's been the draw for going though that way.

As long as the route has the "eat cake and eat more cake" directions how can we go wrong. As for the weather didn't they predict horrible things for today, I was at Herne Hill and while it was a bit chilly it stayed dry. However I was glad I wasn't out in that hailstorm that happened later if its like that Sat AM I might just stay in bed..
BTW this was my first visit to the Good Friday meeting (and the track) and the paced racing with those incredible motorbikes bikes was fantastic, I wouldn't have thought that bikes racing behind motorikes around a cycle track could be so exiting. I really enjoyed the afternoon and would just love to have a go on that track.
I really enjoyed the afternoon and would just love to have a go on that track.

I always like it and riding the track is great fun. A little later when the weather is more reliable there are sessions on a Saturday morning run by Velo Club Londres (VCL). You need to do a starter session before you are allowed to ride at Herne Hill, this starts at 9 or 9:30 and runs for a couple of hours. You can hire a bike from the track, you just take you own pedals to put on the bike. They take you around, and up and down the track and getting used to riding on it and the fixed wheel bike.

After the starter session there is another that follows straight on if you want to do that. Once you've done the starter you can then race there on the main Saturday session or in the league that runs on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Tamar did them last year and I'm planning on getting down for the Wednesday sessions this year.

Wasn't bothered about the cold or wind and had the fixie straining at the leash. I was even in the process of getting ready when there was a hail and freezing rain shower which prompted the about turn, looked like it would actually have been all right though. Helped out my Dad with a bit of destruction so got to wave a big hammer about and smash an old desk up which cheered me up no end.
