Some people...

Postby Ivor » Wed Mar 19, 2008 11:08 am

My thoughts last night were dark and brooding...

I'd had a good ride into work (22 miles) in the morning. Decided to catch the train home, had a leisurely ride to the station (ok ok I went flat out). tucked the bike away and sat down.

Collected bike, got off at my station, started to pull away.... and twang twang twang twang.... eh?

oh super fantastic.

At some point on the journey someone had either kicked or stomped on the rear wheel and snapped a spoke and bent the rim.

sigh.

That's terrible :(

That happened to a mate of mine a few years ago when he left his mountain bike in a guard's van

Can't take bikes on my trains but the way people move about when they commute they were probably just shoving through (because they are always more important than anyone else) and sending anyone/thing else flying.

It's like a military charge getting on and off my trains - elbows out head down chucking pregnant women to the side all to squeeze in to the carriage  . I can't be arsed myself and just wait for the next train.

For your safety and security, CCTV cameras are in operation on all services.

This is criminal damage - I'd get the train company to review the footage and identify the miscreant, damn his/her eyes :x

Ah, a dreamer. how sweet. :)
Just need to try and source a non-standard sized spoke now.

You sure the spoke didn't just break on its own? When my old Open Pro wheels were getting towards the end of their life they were popping a spoke every few hundred miles, and sometimes I didn't notice it'd happened until the next ride.

Maybe someday I'll join you.

seems unlikely. was fine on four mile trip to station and was fine when parked in carriage. broken when un-parked 40 minutes later.

I've experienced the same thing - only the bike was parked right next to where I was sitting for the whole train journey and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed someone stomping on my wheel. What had evidently happened was that the spoke had let go while I was riding but I didn't notice it until later on. It seems it can take a wheel a mile or two to go really badly out of true after a spoke breakage, and the broken spoke doesn't always immediately start rattling or hitting the stays.

The wheel may well have taken a knock, deliberate or otherwise (was the spoke bent? If so it certainly wasn't a spontaneous breakage!). But it seems unlikely that someone would bother kicking the bike only hard enough to break just one spoke, not to mention risk getting caught in an act of vandalism.

[quote="Wal"]was the spoke bent?

yes the spoke is bent and the end, er, "bobble" snapped off.

Well. 1. a lot of people are pretty hostile to bikes on trains, even neat sexy folders like mine, so it wouldn't surprise me.
2. to be honest it was probably someone being clumsy and accidentally standing on the wheel/putting their foot against the spoke whilst herding on/off the train....

but even so. it's sodding annoying.
