Im thinking about building a TT bike.

Any advice in respect to what frame/components i should get would be appreciated. I will probably look for 2nd hand stuff on ebay to keep costs reasonable.

E-bay is good if you have a lump sum to spend at one go. I ended up getting my stuff bit by bit as that was how I had the money. My bike is a mixture of Tiagra/105 while Ribble were selling stuff cheap. My first set of wheels I got from Planet X for £99 (Reynolds Alta comp) again then they were selling off stuff. As I said on Wednesday I got my Cougar frame for £65. The quality of components, apart from wheels, doesn't need to be very high I believe as they don't get the pounding a road bike takes. Apart from early season races the majority of the time you are racing on roads with reasonable/good surfaces.

Like all things cycling there are various schools of thoughts. I believe that if you have a good position, wheels and pointy hat (and legs of course) then you can achieve what you want. The aero profile of tubes, seat pin etc etc just isn't that important to me at the moment. The only thing I would change with mine at the mo is to put a carbon fork on it. If you google things like TT frame sizing, aero dynamics etc there is plenty of stuff. To be fair I got a lot of my thinking from articles in Cycling Plus that showed it from a cheap perspective to the expensive one. I still have them if you want to borrow them.

If you go to the CTT website and log onto the Invision forum there is plenty of helpful advice from people who have been doing it for a long time (including national medal holders past and present) and a for sale section where things always seems reasonable.

If you want to borrow my bike at somepoint you are more than welcome. Having ridden RichV's (old) TT bike it certainly doesn't ride as nice as that but it gets the job done :D

They have a lot of good deals crop up in there (I got my new PX wheels from there) and it should give you a bit more piece of mind that you are buying from a genuine person upgrading (hopefully), you'll have to be a bit more careful with your vetting on ebay as there are quite a lot of sharks on there trying to flog TT bikes whole - the deals look too good to be true, and they are. There was a post recently where someone was flogging a full carbon bike and said it was based in Coventry but when the bloke came to pay they said (in very pigeon English) to send the money to China.

If you don't find a TT frame to build up, or find they are too pricey, then a lot of people start with an "old" Alu Giant TCR frames as with the compact frame you can get a good aero position on a smaller frame with big seat pin and the frame is stiff, you'll also get a carbon fork. I've seen quite a lot of builds based on these at open events. Anything you could build up as a dedicated bike so you could have proper tri-bars and bar end shifters will give you a good start point regarding position and staying in it for gear shifting, also you'd be able to keep the seat position the same without having to move it about a bit (up and forward probably) from road riding. Anything else can be added gradually as / if you want to / can afford it. Re wheels Rich will be able to tell you all about the wheel covers for your rear wheel.

I picked up most of the mechanical bits for mine on ebay too, but got from shops having clearouts rather than private sellers. I know you use Shimano on your road bike anyway but you'd be better sticking to this anyway if you are building up on a budget. Shimano do 2 different bar end shifters I think (Ultegra and DA) and I believe they are cheaper, whereas Campag only do Record. Most bikes get built up on Shimano too so there are more of these shifters available 2nd hand (particularly if you build up a 9 speed), Campag shifters 2nd hand are like hen's teeth so I had to buy mine new.

That is nice Marek, it's a top TT frame and the one John Lovell has upgraded too. Would make for quite an expensive build up though (integrated tri-bars don't come cheap), I thought Paul was after a more budget build. Nowt wrong with Alu.

No Andrew, mine is a P2C. All Carbon and a bl**dy sight lighter but more expensive than that one!! :shock:

I was/am in the same situation paul. But i havn't got the patience to wait for deals on e-bay etc,then build it all up
I looked at poss buying a frame then building from there but by the time i have bought all the bits inc some nice aero wheels i figured it wold be around a grand +.So now thinking of going for the planet x stealth 105 or ultegra build and adding the px 50's
That cervelo frame marek looks fab and a good price
Andrew,what did you pay for the px 50's?,did you get them second hand?

I got them 2nd hand but brand new and never used, hadn't even had tape/glue applied to the rim. The bloke got them in the PX sale and then started to worry about weight issues as he was a big fella. I got them for £350. Think they are about £500 new.

Sounds pretty good for the dosh. Wheels will need upgrading and you may want to upgrade the brakes. Are you happy with 9 speed, what have you got on your other bikes?

FOR SALE: Massi Aluminium (6023) aero TT/Road/Triathlon Bike (pictured right). 56cm CTC, top tube 54cm CTC. £690 + P&P or pick up. This bike could be used for any of the above. It rides really great, is light and super stiff. It has a well maintained used Dura Ace 9spd groupset of which the chain, brake pads and rear mech are brand new. The wheels are spinnery rev x which look great, are true with no dings or scratches. Also the tyres and tubes are new. Pretty much everything on the bike is in the best of condition. I think the px wheels only come in tubs- i maybe wrong tho'.

I think Paul is around my height so a 53/54cm TT frame would fit. I guess a 56 frame would be a bit big.

Dom is a lot taller than me( and quicker, and thinner- plus he has his own hair- and teeth) so i guess he rides a 56/57cm?

The Giant could well be a good starter / base for the bike. Would depend on what pics looked like but for that price you couldn't really go far wrong. With them you'd want to know the effective top tube length as they are a compact geometry so the seat tube doesn't give much of an indication to the frame size.

9 speed shouldn''t be an issue Marek as 9 speeds would be more than enough for TTs, even a weakling like myself doesn't use that bigger range of gears. The only possible one I can think of is replacing or upgrading at a later date you'd be reliant on 2nd hand parts unless you did the whole drivetrain.

50mm deep carbon rims, good silent and silky smooth hubs.
Tubs. - I think they do a clincher Ian but I'd stick with tubs on deep carbon rims (which I'd only be using for racing anyway) rather than have extra weight on the rim from a glued on alu rim to take the tyre.

It's now on ebay and don't know what the reserve would be, but I think they are pretty good bikes (and this one is well spec'd). Might be worth watching to see what it gets to and what the reserve goes at.
