Ade Merckx

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

i think i may have just sussed something out....

http://www.londoncyclesport.com/Blogs/B ... =1&V=4&SP=

is that your blog mr matt ives??

if not hes pretty similar....44, 3rd cat, did his first group ride since the summer on saturday (like you)...and he mentions how some of the racers were not there, perhaps that refered to paul and george taking it easy? did the elmers end chain gang tuesday (like you), spoke of how people were dropped, how you met with old people from the club who have moved up, perhaps that was tim who you said was there.... theres more stuff but i wont carry on, i dont want to make a fool of myself if im wrong, or if everyone allready knows....:D

cheers,
stu

I also just stumbled upon that blog and reckon it isn't.

If only for this in the profile - I get out on my bike: More than three times a week

Striking similarities though.

Stu - that hill you took left of Titsey - it's the Bec Hill Climb one :D

I would like to say it's me, but I'm afraid I can't .
Plus, judging by his photo, he still has all his hair.
Another 44 year old 3rd cat out there? I thought I had the copyright on that.

Well, I did get to Elmers End rather early and there was a group of 4 riders waiting around. I got chatting to them and they were all new to the chaingang. One of them was a 3rd cat (didn't ask which club) and he was up there at the end riding really strongly, so maybe it's his blog. Come to think of it, he did have a faintly Germanic air about him.

Hmmmm, well spotted Stu.

By the way Stu I can't remember when you joined the club but last year there was a Wednesday evening hilly ride that might (if there's interest, but it was quite well attented last year) be done again this year when the evenings lighten up.

Depending on your racing/education but it would probably be right up your street. It took it Chalkpit (evil hairpin) and White Hill (the one off Titsey) and 3 or 4 others. As Sylvain says that's the one the Bec hill climb is on and might be worth putting in your diary for a season finisher. It's fantastic with big crowds cheering you on. It's on 21st October this year.

Power meter without hub or crank sensors, 92gm altogether

http://www.ibikesports.com/ibikemovie/ibikemovie.html

Works it out by measuring opposing forces to rider's power; using gradient, wind speed and rolling resistance (not sure if last one is an input or measured data?)

sounds far-fetched but seems to work

Blog Monday

Well the day didn't start under the best auspices as just out of Croydon an oncoming car decided to take a right turn cutting right across my path without looking, wooshh I went along the front bumper, and kaplunk on my right side on the tarmac. Got up mostly unhurt safe for scraped hip, arm and hand. Bike only had a scrape at the saddle, Assos bibs miraculously intact, but Rapha jacket sustained two holes and so did WC jersey. At least she recognised her 100% own fault and said she would pay for the damage. Thankfully (for her) Rapha can send me some fabric to be patched at the dry cleaners.

At lunchtime I wanted to do a workout at the gym, got onto the bike for a warmup, then into the workout proper it took me less than a minute at 250W to realise that my legs were actually pretty sore from yesterday's ride (started with Ian's social ride, which included a couple hard digs with Chris and Neil, then went back on my own via Box Hill) and that I wasn't going to withstand twenty minutes of it. So, to make the most of today's spring weather, I went for an easy run instead, banking on the fact that my running muscles would be in better shape than the cycling ones. Still felt pretty tired, especially facing the strong Westerly wind along the Thames. Took a slightly shorter route than usual, but still clocked over 36 minutes when it usually takes me 33-34.

With the clocks forward an hour, I might start riding back through Crystal Palace (and maybe do a few laps of the circuit to get reacquainted with it - hope I don't meet George on the way ...) or doing my extra 5-mile hilly loop up to Selsdon, hoping to do the gym bike session tomorrow and mostly resting Thursday and Friday in preparation for Saturday's race.

To the "proper" bloggers: keep on writin'

And to all: ride safely
