I think I will kind of miss the external gear cables, they give you something to grab hold of when in a TT tuck on the tops of your bars.

Yep ... although I've never had the chance to do that in a road race yet ...

I have done it a couple of times in the last few weeks in my break-aways. But I really learnt to do it riding the Crawley Crit last May, I had gotten dropped and was basically doing a TTT with a few other riders trying to get back on. Each time I came to the home straight I would put my arms forward, my head down, and pretend I was some kinda super domestique chasing down a break in the Tour  :P .

I thought it was the Guilford Crit you meant - was gonna ask where on earth you found a place to do that in that race!

Nah, the Guilford Crit was practice for my up-coming Flanders epic!
Not the electronic version, but all the other supposed improvements.

I'm quite excited to see the developments of the electronic versions and what changes that brings about.
I can imagine all sorts of technical wizardry being implemented once the idea is established and(/if) it works.
Once you have a computer automatically able to make rapid calculated simultaneous shifts perhaps there'll be a gearing revolution... unusual combinations, non sequential gears at the rear...

Get yourself some Campag or SRAM then ...

That was the comment we heard from one industry insider (who doesn't work at Shimano) and it'll be interesting to see if that holds true.

More quotes from the article:

Shimano has made the bold decision to increase the cable pull on the new 7900 group. Much like SRAM and Campagnolo, this means that the new drivetrain should be far more tolerant of housing contamination, slight maladjustments and hanger dimension variances than
The new STI Dual Control levers themselves will finally ditch the old-school hood shape in favour of a flatter and more hand-friendly top surface – like Campag. Carbon brake lever blades and titanium hardware – like Campag will drop some weight while adjustable lever reach will better accommodate smaller hands and a wider assortment of bar bends. As we reported earlier, derailleur housing will finally be concealed beneath the bar tape for a cleaner appearance. – like Campag
The rear derailleur lightens up with a carbon cage – like Campag

FYI Mr Green...

My snapped gear cable last week was because it was three years old and perhaps a little stretched! It had been showing tell tale signs of its age for a while. But my youth and in-experience meant I didn't realise it was on the brink of snapping!
