10 May - Slightly extended CR for TT Newbies

Ahoy there

On may 10th I plan to take a shufti along the G10/57 (10 mile TT course which starts @ Rusper). I mentioned this a while back - plan is to have a whizz round the course before the SCCU 10 on May 31st. This could be a good opportunity for those wanting to have a try out at a ten.....to do just that. We'd just head over to the start (miss or delay the caff I suggest). We'd have to keep our own informal times, I'd be happy to act as pusher and we could leave a marker in the finish layby so people know when to switch off their bike computer. Just a thought...

It's not a bad course (though a few roundabouts and a railway bridge to get over) and if you like the feel of it - you'll still have time to enter the formal race at the end of May and get a point for the Rawson Shield - wahey!!

Put a reply up here if you're interested and I'll sort it all out, I'll even bring cake for the finish

Put me down for that one Snoup. I've been dying to do a time trial in my early days of cycling. I can then have a time to put in my scrap book and then spend the next 10 years trying to beat it.
I hope you get alot of interest on this one, Ooooooo I could crush a grape!!!!!

That would be great. I am hoping to do some later in the Summer. Will check I can get out that morning. Is the route straight over the roundabouts and bridge? I guess there is not a lot of traffic on the road that early in the morning anyway.

A left turn onto the dual carriageway and then one left turn at the top of the railway embankment on the way out, becomes a right turn on the way back and you go straight on at the roundabout you started at to the finish. You are following the main traffic flow all the way (apart from the turn) though. When you're racing early in the morning as long as you keep your head up and wits about you the roundabouts aren't a problem. When doing a test ride in the middle of a club run take care on the roundabouts as the traffic has built up by then and the roads aren't exactly quiet.

Hmmmm - richv is right of course we need to exercise care. We could arrange to set off a bit earlier than usual. That way maybe we could head down, have a go and then do the caff

Let's see how the take up goes then we'll agree the logistics nearer the time. Roll up, roll up!!

PS - plan B could be an alternative CR passing by the ACC Holmwood course...? Less roundabouts to navigate - would also be a totally different pre and post ride. I'd happily dream up something along these lines. Good prep for ACC evg 10s......we'll see

Snoop - I wasn't trying to frighten anyone about the traffic. The road is perfectly rideable mid-morning just encourage everyone not to go charging into the roundabouts with their heads down expecting not to have to stop. Depending upon how I get on on Kent's sunny ski slope I may well pop over to join you as well.

Hutch describes his first TT thus:

"This was not a glamorous sport. It was not an immediately welcoming sport either. As I was getting ready, a short, middle-aged stranger limped over to inform me that 'We don't like newcomers here.' It was like Deliverance on wheels."

So, if you really want the newbies to get a flavour of what it's like, mutter under your breath at the start, give them only the vaguest indications of where to turn (make sure the roundabout isn't marshalled either) and insist they all wear plain black tights. And then sell them some stale cake and a plastic cup of luke-warm tea at the end. Disappear quietly while some riders are still on the course.

Seriously, though, even the traditionalist in me thinks this might be a good way of getting people started. I've pencilled this date in for my annual '10' (on the ski-slope this time), but will happily help out if I'm around.
