Shimagnolo

Due to my previous wheel woes (my only usable spare back wheel being Shimano), that have got worse! I have been researching the compatibility of using a Shimano cassette with Campag 9 speed shifter and gears. On google the consensus seems to be that you can with very little adjustment to the rear mech.

I wil be giving this a bash at the weekend and was wondering if anybody in the club has any experience of it.

I have mixed set up on my winter bike. I use campag 10 speed shifters with shimano rear mech and 8 speed cassette. The set up works fine.

[quote="Sean_BanciaoDad©"]I can hear the wheels whirring in Mr 's head from here in Taiwan just at the thought :D

 Campag wheels obviously.

The CTC page Grahame links to is the place. Some of the traditional CTC tourers who go everywhere on a bike like to be able to use Shimano small MTB gearing at the back, but wanted Campag ergos so that they could have a bar bag without the washing lines getting in the way.

Jonathan B, as you have the 10 speed shifters you can use these with shimano 10 speed cassette, you just need to get the little pulley that converts campag shifting to shimano shifting. Links are on CTC I think.

The job has been done and everything seems to work fine. Campag 9 speed shifters and mech and a Shimano 9 speed cassette. Sorry if it offends the purists (Paul) :D but when needs must.

I have it from the horse's mouth - Guy Pearson use Campag shifters with Shimano gears because he reckons the Campag ergo brake levers are far more comfortable than Shimano :D

There you go, proof positive if I ever heard it. Tips from a horse. :D Basically this proves one thing that shimano gears are better and he has the hands of a three year old boy.

bamboo reinforced bunker.....

Hold on, hold on......you seem to be missing 1/2 the sentence....

"uses Campag shifters.........Campag ergo levers are far more comfortable than Shimano"

"Comfort" is a very individual and subjective measure. Personally, I find the Hungarian tractor levers are small and cramped. "Your mileage may vary" as they say in American car adverts.

True Grahame, as it the preference for the way the gears/brakes/levers operate but I refuse to be drawn in to a logical common sense debate, when wild and subjective statements can be bandied around. :P

Remind me again which ones are fishing reels, which ones are hungarian tractor levers?
Lost track of who I'm supposed to be cheering. Which ones are the precision far eastern technical marvels and which ones are the european lumps of artfully hammered pig-iron?

With an Italian bike you should be hiding in a darkened corner if it doesn't have Campagnolo on it.

"Fishing reels" = Shimano amongst whose first products were the ratchet action fishing reels that provided the inspiration for the first STI levers

"Hugarian tractor parts" = Campagnolo whose early product line included parts for tractors and whose "Hand crafted Italian" claims disappeared out of the window when they decided to reduce costs (but not customer prices) by outsourcing their production to former communist states.

As for which you are supposed to be cheering. That, like the comfort factor, is personal and subjective.
