SCCU sporting 10 and 25

Postby Jon H » Sat Apr 05, 2008 10:22 pm

Somewhat mixed weather for this afternoons 10 at Oakwoodhill. I was an early starter at number 10 and did my warm-up on mostly dry roads. The rain started as the race started and as I waited at the start line the heavens opened. Then just as quickly it stopped again and the roads started to dry out for the later starters. At least the hail waited until after the race to put in an appearance.

Results of the Addiscombe riders:
George Brent 24:44
Jon Hemming 25:19
Rob Royle-Evatt 26:39
Paul Tunnel 28:54 (including having to scrape himself up off the floor)
Terry Hill 29:15
Andrew Green 29:22

The 10
[quote="orv"] no excuses about a flat tyre holding him back this time?

It's a horrible, tough course.

A crap weekend for me. I had a late start and just when I was going to get the bike out and start warming up the heavens opened :( . Couldn't be arsed to get soaking wet and cold warming up so stayed in the HQ. I knew this would be no good for me as I need at least a 30-40min warm up for a 10 - don't know why but my legs don't wake up until they've been pedaling for half an hour or so.

I ended up with a barely token 15 mins with Rob, who was off a couple in front of me, once the rain had stopped.

Started, felt rubbish, legs hurt from the word go  . Carried on as best I could on this nasty course which I really don't like and will very quickly find out the unprepared, unfortunately. Determined to at least beat evens though so just kept pushing, although I could never find a gear I was happy with, and slogged back to beat that at least anyway.

[quote]Oh no. what happened?

He spun himself off on a straight piece of road  . Nasty road rash top, middle and bottom of right leg, and a nasty looking hole in his right hand. Didn't stop him riding home though  . He also had his newly pimped TT bike out with new disc and insanely deep front wheel. Hope you and the bike are okay on closer inspection this morning Paul.

The 25
Decided to treat this as a training effort and ride fixed. Took the mudguards off and fitted an 81" gear (48x16).

Light snow as I left but that wasn't going to be a problem, just make a good hard training race/ride. It got heavier as I made my way to Rob's to collect him. Getting heavier and settling all the time so it was going to be touch and go, but I'd ride so long as it wasn't dangerous.

We passed Jim out for a ride on our way - Yes that's 80 year old Jim out on his bike this morning  . Makes you feel a wimp doesn't it.

After turning off at the giant cock towards the Holmwood course it was getting bad. Snow on the road and having to stay in the car tracks. We got halfway to Beare Green (just seeing if we could get there to sign DNS officially and get a cup of tea) when it became very slippery under foot/tyre. A slight wiggle when I very gently caressed the brake pedal and I was turning around straight away to get home.

One joyous moment on the way back was coming back down the dual carriageway a BMW ( ) came passed me at about 45-50 on the fresh slippery snow, tried to move back in to the tyre tracks and just managed it with a big rear wiggle. I said to Rob he must be mad and we'd probably see him spun off further down.

:D    :D Half a mile later and there they were spun off on to the central verge, at it's steepest point :D , where they were completely beached with no chance of getting free. Made my day to see some justice met out so swiftly.

Anyhoo back home slowly and carefully, heater on high and bacon sizzling in the pan 8) .

I've got 2 more TTs next weekend, if anyone has any sway in these things can we have some better weather please.

Six of us set off on the 10 mile TT yesterday, Paul was one of the early starters and just as I was about to set off Paul had just finished with some nasty looking gravel rash to his right thigh, he had come a cropper and it wasn't even on a corner, I thought to myself well I'd better take it a little more easy on the all the corners then :o

Straight from the off down on the drops and the roads were very wet, my rear end was sliding all over the place and that was on a straight piece of road in thge aero position, I was thinking if I just stay upright this is gonna be a miracle  The disc whith Vittoria CS tub is so slippery, I should have stuck the bora on instead with the decent grippy conti tub, I don't think I'll chance the disc again in a wet event.

Well the first mile was the worst and after that there was more grip on offer, whole parts of the course were actually totally dry, especially up by Ockley. I got into a nice rythm and my heart rate up to 175, the drag up to Ockly was demanding to keep the speed up at 22mph.

Left turn and up a couple of rises and out the saddle with a hard effort, after the rise of each hill/drag I really had to concentrate and dig deep to keep the heart up at a good rate, this was tricky to do and I think needs a little time to master, especially on a 10 where an all out effort must be maintained for an optimum time.

Towards the finish I passed, Terry, Robert and Andrew in going in the opposite direction on the start of their rides, I gave them a shout of encouragement.

Its seemed to go by in a flash, I had passed 3 riders and almost got my 2 minute man by the end, maybe I went a little too cautiously on some of the corners as I was a minute off the pace of some of the top riders, I got a 24.44 which is good but only finished in 9th I think. But at least managed to stay upright and ready to fight the next day.

Sunday drove the team bus down with Paul who wasn't up to riding down after coming off yesterday but was still gonna ride the event. It was a little cold and we got there early after reconnoitering the course, It was raining a little so we went inside for a cuppa the looked out the window and everything turned white. It was beautiful but unfortunately the race was cancelled.

p.s. Funniest thing was when Richard was driving his car off the grass, he accidently splattered our President from head to foot in mud, even he couldn't help himself from bursting out laughing, I ask you some people

Just started my w/up, when a lady competitor, I think from the Finsbury Park club came a right cropper on a bend, I helped as best I could, nothing too serious but badly shocked, put her in a marshals car with a blanket and the heater on. Then made my way to the start.
The roads were getting better but didn`t really have the strength to attack any hills, got what i expected, thought and hoped to go perhaps a minute faster but the conditions were not up for a good time. Pretty good training though.
My next race is at Andover in a fortnight, which has the reputation of being a quick course, please let the weather be good.
