Kingston Phoenix 10 - 12th April

Postby Andrew G » Sat Apr 12, 2008 7:50 pm

3 Agreeables in action today, and I was the only one to stay dry :D .

Ian and I had our new toys out to play and Tamar was riding twice, once with Keith on the tandem.

I should have done 4 TTs this season before today but the record so far reads:
1) Ridden Sporting 21 in torrential rain.
2) Sporting 28 iced off.
3) Sporting 10 ridden badly as laughable "warm up" due to heavy rain before starting, hail just after finishing.
4) Sporting 25 snowed off.

 , can I have a normal TT please?

Yes, a normal 10 on the Holmwood course. I was there early and Tamar and Keith were off first on the tandem, then Ian 17 minutes later. I was then to follow about 40 mins after Ian. Unfortunately for them there was a very heavy shower, this meant all 3 had a very wet warm up and ride. I sat in my car looking at the blue sky working it's way towards us and working out it would arrive in time :D .

The rain stopped in time for me to have a proper warm up so I was lucky. On to the actual race, and straight in to a strong head wind. This was my first proper ride on the TT bike, and only my second time astride it so the first couple of miles were a bit unusual as I got used to being in a proper TT position.

It did feel more effective in to the wind, even taking in to account the psychological effect new kit plays. The wheels make a nice wooshy noise too :D .

I had my minute man in my sights quite a lot of the time but it was a slow reel in and he kept dropping out of sight on the little drags and drops. Nearing the turn I knew he was mine  as I'd closed the gap quite a lot. The road was still a bit wet at the turn, and not knowing the handling of the bike tip-toed round it a bit before the run back.

Thankfully now the wind was behind and it was so much easier to keep the gear rolling along. The wind would have played some part but I did find it noticeably easier to roll a bigger gear in the tuck position than in my normal bike position, is this normal TT-ers?

Approaching the Beare Green roundabout I was right on top of the guy in front. As we exited I had a quick check over my right shoulder for traffic, and found my rocket (zero numbered top seeded rider) there. He shot through and then I moved out to nab my minute man and now have another handy carrot to chase :) . This one rode away from me though :( .

Really pushed the last bit and came in with 25:31 - only 3 seconds off my PB which was got on the same course. Happy with that for the first ride on the new bike, and it was a slightly chilly day with a strong wind very early in the season, whereas my PB was on a nice warm sunny day at the end of last season. The bike was lovely to ride and the position seems fine, although I was getting a bit sore towards the end but I have a slight imbalance which probably caused this so may have to look as some wedges or similar.

Big bowl of pasta for dinner and the alarm set for 4am  for tomorrow.

I felt a bit sorry for Ian as he had to do his ride in probably the worst weather possible as it was hammering it down on him. He also had Tim Stevens as his rocket, and the bloke behind(John Wager) him ended up winning (I think) with a 22.06. For him to be that quick and off a 9 he must be another George in his first season without any times to seed him on. He won't get a 9 again that's for sure.

Tamar & Keith (tandem) 22.37
Ian M 27.07
Me 25.31
Tamar 26.32
Keith 22.18 (2nd placed solo ride after the tandem!)

Is it just me....?
my second time astride it

The weather was awful.
I was right on top of the guy in front :o

Well it was my first competitive 10 for about 9 months- evening 10's- and open 10 for 2 years. ( dont worry , i was sh1t then as well)
I arrived at HQ with darkening skies- it had already hailed and pished down on the way there.
Nice to see Jackie at the sign in, i did suggest that we cut to the chase and go straight to the cakes and not bother about the race.
It would seem that i need to get my excuses out first ( in a kind of Lockey stylee) sh1t busy week at work--- fighting off a cold lent to me from my brother, BB playing up , hip replacement op, mullet hairsyle......
I had a nice long warm up(?) in the rain, RRE kindly kept me company and bolsted my fragile confidence. This time trialling lark is just great innit, cue hail ,rain, gales.
Of to the start then... #15 did not show, can't blame him, the last time i did a TT i was in a thong!
30 seconds...... where's me bike clips,5-4-3-2-1-...... off out of spook hill like a sloth..... who the feck has covered the A24 in treacle!?
It was only raining at the start- 200 yards down the road it was hailing( no, not the island) I was buffeted about from gutter to the white line and managed to find every puddle on the road.
I was soaked ,frozen and mightily pished orft, i dont ride in the rain- it ruins my hair.At the first R.A.B the guy 1 min behind came storming past- b'stard!
By the time i was approaching the turn the guy 2 mins behind came past  - now he had some thighs on him- mine were about the size of his calves- all i have heard from Joannafor the last 7 hours is "did you see the size of his legs"
Just after the turn the sun came out and we had a bit of a tailwind, up ahead in the distance... a trike.... I soon had 'im (big deal)
At the last R.A.B it was my good old friend Mr crosswind and headwind against me- again- still i guess it was the same for most of the riders.
After crossing the line i felt i could have done a bit more - but not a lot tho.
I have gone quicker over the same course by over 1 min+ on my road bike but a combination of weather and cold combined to defeat me (again)
Nice cake and chat at HQ afterwards.

Andrew - sorry i did not stick around too long- i was freezing and very wet.
Well done on todays time in difficult conditions

A "big up "to Tamar and Keith off first with the tandem.. then a solo ride each at the back end of the field 8)
I got home and had a bath, then a 1hour POWER nap.

Aint life grand?

There were at least a few positives from todays ride, the bike was comfortable to ride, it felt very fast in the aero tuck ( well my version of it ).

A couple of q's for the TT meisters.... do carbon rims always squeal...the guys that came past me were mashing big gears but were all rocking about swinging from side to side- is this the stylee?
I obviously need to work on my position and perhaps get a pointy hat, skinsuit...? everything is tight on me

Good job folks, great times with some good excuses to back 'em up. Before this event  asked why so few entrants. I wonder Mr M - would you like to make any further comment...? The weather certainly raged against you, I'd kill for a 27.07 on the Holmwood  (well maybe not literally). I pb'd on the G10/57 last yr in 27.37  Here's to bigger and better things ahead...

Well done y'all, TT Tastic

"Legs" was Tim Stevens, a super rider. Just so Joanna can keep an eye out for him on future start sheets  .

I don't blame you shooting off Ian, since I got a soaking once I always make sure my kit bag has a towel and spare everything to change in to. I never used to bother with socks but cold damp feet in trainers doesn't make for much comfort.

Last year this event was in glorious sunshine and about 20 degrees.

Big congratulations to Mr Green - I know how mighty pleased you were with that ride - and rightly so.

I was relieved that there weren't many other ladies riding so I could ignore my some-way-off-my-best-time-due-to-excess-cakes-and-no-hard-riding and focus instead of the fact I got a prize - whoohoo!

First time on the tandem in months and we'd totally forgotten how to ride together. Keith wanted to mash, I wanted to spin, plus I'd got my saddle (hastily attached that morning) pointing a bit downwards so I kept slipping forwards and having to hitch myself backwards every few pedal strokes.

Embarassingly Keith went 20 seconds faster without me.

Looking fwd to seeing Mr Munnery's times coming down over the season, as I'm sure they will when he gets into the swing of this tt lark.

Toks, no i did not have the power meter on, i just used the garmin watch- forerunner 305. I had it positioned so i could not see it as well  .
I really missed the display of the old powertap- its the first time for 6 months or so i have ridden without it.
But like young Orv -i too have purchesed a set of wheelcovers on the strength of Rich Vs advice.

When i downloaded the race file on sunday i could see when the hail storm hit me, i went from 24mph to just over 12!

I did ride on sunday, and again i got hailed and rained on for over 2 hours of a 4 hour ride, so thats soaking wet twice in one weekend.
I went out with the point of riding never below 210w avg- got home with 221avg for 4 hours so i was pleased with that. I am not up to full speed yet  , pacing is an art.
Its my first 25 this weekend and i am looking forward to it.
BTW i ordered the wheel covers last weds morning and they arrived on the tues morning- good service and they fit well.

I just got to do them justice
