SCCU 25

Postby Snoop Doug » Sun Apr 20, 2008 11:22 am

Breezy day on the G25/53. Struggled with the first few miles trying to find a rhythm as the wind knocked me about. Got settled and pushed on to finish in 1.10.15. A PB by 55 seconds 8) . Need to work on finding a good pace earlier into the ride. I'd hoped for 1.10 or better but under the circumtances I'm happy with what I got. Also - I reckon I nailed the tongues out pic for the day too, which let's face it is what's really important

We had a lot of riders out today - the Rawson campaign is looking just fine

Also - big thanks to the ACC massive in the shape of pushers par excellence Adrian and Kieran. Well done guys, thanks for turning out and doing your bit :D

Well I sucked at that!

1h12 on my watch although official time of 1h13 I think because of my 1 minute late start (is that how it works?) more on that later....

Am I allowed to use all my excuses in one go? hope so...

so what went right? well the bike was superb and an incident free race for a change.

what went wrong? well had a "bathroom emergency" just before leaving and set off late.... got to the HQ just in time and got my number... then crisis, another emergency with really bad diarrhoea. damnit.

ok recovered, kitted out got to the start just under a minute late. :( luckilly the chap at 73 (I think) was DNS so I slotted in and set off.
No warm up or pre-flight checks and my computer wasn't showing speed. damnit.
ok off flat out, nice steady rhythm and 10 minutes in, cramp. :( oh for f*cksake this is annoying. ok not too bad perhaps related to the earlier troubles so keep it going.
Then Tamar blitzed past going nicely, hmm perhaps I need to up the pace a little.
Smooth and steady, although having major snot troubles, still at the tail end of my long running cold and I just can't seem to clear it....
20 minutes in, snort cough spit... and throw up! albeit ever so elegantly, ok this is not feeling great! :(
But b*gger it I'm going to get this course done, at least there are no hills this time, just a sod of a headwind. Just keep the head down and count the pedal strokes, left, right, left, right....
ok 40 minutes and I'm being steadilly passed every few minutes and the numbers are getting bigger, can't be them many more behind me now.
No idea of my pace since my speed isn't showing, just concentrating on keeping the cadence up.
Every time I duck down to try and get a bit more aero, stomach protests, so sit back up and keep spinning.
about 55 minutes and coming up to the broadbridge roundabout, oh it would be so easy to just duck in here and pull up, but there can't be much further now.
ok hop oast rbout coming up, is that the last one? I can't remember, I think it is, but I'm sure I haven't done long enough and I don't have any mileage, ok give it my all on the drag up.... only to see the arrow pointing on. oh b*llocks. there's another isn't there.
hokey, keep it going, there's no point stopping or easing up, just hard as possible up to the last roundabout, turn and back down.
right just push as hard as possible, left, right, left, right. and there's the timekeeper and flag.
drop down to the 25 and slowly meander back to the carpark. flap aimlessly towards the agreeables standing by their car and cling on to the back of my car so I don't fall down.

sigh, but that's it. tea and cake and a nice chat to the other ACCers at HQ. Chuckle at Andrew and Jon(?) struggling with their legs. Luckilly noone saw me trying later to get into my car!!!

Guess I need a bit more practice at this then! Quite a few stupid mistakes there that I shouldn't have made.

Cripes Ivor - that's what I call suffering for your art  !! Still - it's all good learning and doubtless better things await you.

As I said at the HQ Snoop I doubt that there will be many PBs today. Well done.

Well done Ivor on a hard day. Try not to start flat out it's along way from there :D

After warming up on the A29 I had a pretty good idea where the wind was and had already told myself to start steady which I did. I was number 25, caught 24 and 23 (Ben on his new bling bike) by about 3 miles. The headwind was very hard but I was looking forward to turning round.

With the wind behind it was fantastic until Tollgate Hill but again steady up there, down the other side and it was hammer time :D Spent most of the next 8 or 9 miles in 53 X13/14. The odd bit of 12 and a bit of 15. I was concious of having to make up time from the headwind. Kept it going up past Broadbridge Heath and began to struggle on the slope again  . Over the top passed 21 and went hard down to the final turn aware that I would be finishing into a headwind. And so it was crawl up back to Hop Oast ? and down the other side. Did the same as last week and pushed hard and had nothing left with 300 yards to go. I even had to change down gear because of the wind. I passed no 7 before the line and was within 20 seconds of no 18 when I crossed. Felt pretty spent by the end.

Finished with a 59.01. Pleased because my legs did not feel too good when warming up and because it felt like I had not lost too much time in the headwind.

The winning time was a 54.21 by Steve Dennis. Bec did well :?

I'll let the other agreeables tell there times and the stories attached to them :D

I was off at number 44 but wearing 81 to confuse the timekeepers nicely. I'd collected my original number then put it in the boot, laid my jersey down to pin it on and...no number :? . A check everywhere including the bog (thankfully well before Ivor had visited) saw no sign of it. Hence wearing 81 and still bellowing 44 as I passed the finish timekeeper but they were up to the job I clearly wasn't and had no problems. Packing the bike and kit away and found the original number which had somehow tucked itself under a wheelbag  .

Sterling pushing off Mr A, sorry I whacked you in the face with my pointy hat, I forgot about the bit at the back when I turned my head  .

Didn't find the initial out leg in to the wind too bad with it being so early in the course. This probably means I should have been pushing harder but the speed was reasonable I thought so kept it steady. Tollgate was fine, just a bit of a drag but being so early (about 7 miles in) not a problem.

As Dominic says the next bit back with the wind behind was good fun. I'd had my minute man in my site (only about 20 secs ahead) since about the 6 mile mark but he'd clearly sped up as he refused to get any closer. Finally nabbed him after the left hander on the run to Broadbridge Heath.

Horrible drag up to Hop Oast RAB but from there to the Southwater turn was great. Skipping along nicely perched on the tip of the saddle, hammer down in 53x11 with a fairly strong tail wind. I can never feel that it's strong tail wind but knew I wouldn't be doing those speeds without some assistance and the look on others faces coming the other way told me how bad it was for them.

Round the final turn and in to the hideous head wind for the final 4 miles including up a drag to Hop Oast again.

Back at HQ as a happy bunny as I knew I had a PB, confirmation of a 1:06:21 (PB by 43 seconds). Nice chat with Dave Palmer, who'd ridden out, by my car as I limped about like an old man again.

In the HQ I continued to hobble with the muscle just above my right knee (lower quad) screaming at my on a regular basis when I tried to bend it too far. Fine on the TT bike but a killer afterwards, just a case of getting used to the position I think as I'm using muscles in a slightly different way tucked down low on the tri-bars. Rob (Crozier) was in a worse state than me and had Tamar in hysterics with his "Silly Walks" stretching to try and loosen up  .

Super effort Ivor on your debut with all those problems, the top tens and vomiting d'elegance.

Agreeables times:

Doug Shaw (Snoop) - 1:10:15 (PB)
Ben Fancourt - DNF - What happened Ben didn;t see you at the HQ, attack of the puncture fairies?
Dominic Lowe - 59:01
Ian Munnery - 1:08:40 Good debut (PB)
Paul Tunnell - 1:04:15
George Brent - 58:15 Good debut George in blustery wind and still faster than most of us could dream to go (PB)
Robert Royal-Evatt - 1:01:03
Andrew Green - 1:06:21 (PB)
Rob Crozier - 1:03:44
Richard Viney - 1:00:22
Ivor Hewitt - 1:13:22 including a 1minute late start penalty - "interesting" debut and still well under evens (PB)
Tamar Collis - 1:05:05 Fastest Lady

Great showing and superb numbers out, also had a couple of DNS.

You'll be pleased to know that I can now walk at more then 0.00001 mph. That was fun, see you next week when I'll be pushing you all off your bikes :)

Cheers for the cake Andrew it was a great distraction from the soreness in my legs that lasted all too briefly :(

PS - I reckon I'm in with a shout at the tongue out photo comp...

Nice write up "Drago"!
Before I forget, the helmet was crap or at least the permanently attached visor is. Within about 30 seconds of sweating it was like riding blind, I won't use that as an excuse for going slower 'cause it didn't have that much of an impact, it was just a pain in the arse.

George mentioned he's had a steaming up visor before. I wear glasses and my pointy fairing has a visor which holds them on my face nicely and stops them slipping down. I've never had a problem with misting but have with my glasses on a ride before, which led to an unseen pothole/crash incident :( .

Anyhoo I use this which works brilliantly. I got mine at the cycle show and it came in a bag which you use to polish it on/off with but this may have been a promo at the show and you might just get the stick.

I've got some stuff I used to use on my motorcycle visor... can't remember what it was I'll try and find it. It's a liquid not a paste that you polish the plastic with .

Re: SCCU 25

Postby Ian A4size » Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:11 pm

Well i have been working in the garden- cleaning bikes  - since i got home ,so here is my tale....

At least it wasn't raining, i might get to go out on a bike without it lashing down on me for once.
The alarm was set for 5- but i dont need it- been awake since 4.30, so i have only had about 5 hours restless sleep. Which is probably more than the ACC'ers Kieran and Adrian had, as they had to cycle down from Sarf london. Many thanks to the pushers off.
On arrival at HQ i saw quite a few fellow members, snoop was aboard the "black pearl"- a turbo trainer flying the jolly roger.
Dominic was there, so were Mr PVT and George in the "snatch wagon"
Signed on whilst eyeing up the cakes  I had a quick chat with Andrew and Rich V and off for the warm up.
How hot do you need to be for a 25? It was my first so i was clueless- you need to be fairly warm for a 10, so gas mark 5 it was.
Pootling up to the start i became aware of the headwind, hmmmmm- its 5 miles or so to the turn- so the bit back to tollgate hill should be good.
Kieran gave me a good shove and i coasted to the first RAB- not the only time i coasted as well  .
I went out a bit too hard at the start- novice error- 350w seems easy when you're fresh and ready, and the price was paid going up the drag to Moorhead.
Straight on onto the wind- lucky to get up to 35k on the downhill bits.
#30 comes streaming past.......
My minute man is in sight- he should be, he is 25 years older than me
Ahhh ,the joy of the turn- suddenley its all roses, 40kmh no prob, 's'easy this TT lark. Left turn to tollgate hill, gawd this is difficult, my 2 min man is now i my sights- luckily i am using my triple ring so i spin up nice and easy.
Coming down the hill i seem to have an advantage! My 2 min man is eating my dust as i go by at 55kmh, a nice tailwind all the way back to moorhead, right turn and its a bit more downhill - i'm lovin' it!
I get caught freewheelin' by PVT as i approach the RAB, i was just picking my line to miss the pot holed drain cover, oh and the 2 cars on the RAB as well- still the push he gave me was welcome.
A fairly flatish section followed and it was great bowling alongat 45kmh+, this however went slightly t!ts up when ever the road went up as well. By now i was fairly tired, there was not a single place on my saddle that felt comfortable- i am standing writing this!
My favourite piece of the ride came next, slightly downhill, tailwind, smell of home- 53x12, 45-50kmh for what seemed like ages, i knew after the turn it would be hell because i could see the other riders gurning into the headwind.
Now i was paying the price, it's a long drag- pretty much straight and i really thought it would never end, forever changing down, never getting closer to that concrete footbridge, i'm off the tr-ibars now- wheezing like a pair of old bellows...... whoosh "thighs" from last week (posts passim) comes by no problem at all- so it is just me then?
At last i reach that feckin bridge, downhill and a bit of flat and i'm there- but whats this ? Oh no its the gurning headwind...... whoosh there goes George.........
Is that the sign for the finish? I am seriously cooked and i really feel like giving up, even George and "thighs" are slowing, those 300m were so hard, then its over!

I felt really great straight away- big grin- well it is cake time! Endorphin release- tick!
It seems everyone feels the same, it did feel tough in the wind - but i guess it was 50-50 for and against.
The next time i wont start so fast, and hopefully i will not be coming off the back of a cold, i thought i would go about 1.10 so i was pleased to get under that for my first attempt.

Dr Toks, you were bang on the money ( number crunching time folks) 261w avg, i guess the "under hr" boys were nearer 300w.
Avg hr 172
35.8kmh
10 mins 292
20 mins 278
30 mins 272
60 mins 261

legs fecked!

Sorry to hear of your woes Orv, it was probably me and Andrew who were suffering crampy/twitchy legs.
You should not worry about your times at all as your excuses were brilliant, these alone will see your time under the hour in the very near future- you only have to see my post from last weeks phoenix 10 thread (boy i filled half an A4 sheet with them) to see how much i improved since then.

Well done all the ACCers who got round. 8)

Pumped up my lovely disc wheel only to notice a hissing coming from a
Small nick so ditched it and slapped on the Bora.

Set off and was feeling good and had a nice tempo going and into the breezy straights felt good and was below threshold.

My visor started misting up and I was having difficulty seeing properly, this bugged me for the whole tt, I was having to wipe the inside every min or so. Andrew I’ve ordered some of that anti fog stuff now.

Caught and passed my 1 and 2 min men just BEFORE the Moorhead roundabout
Caught and passed my 1 and 2 min men just AFTER the Moorhead roundabout doh!
Either by not being able to see or being stupid I missed the exit and did a whole lap of the roundabout

All I seemed to notice on the other side of the road was yellow Addiscombe kits riding by.

I was riding well and going back with the wind was cranking along in 54/11 for a while on the flat.
Tim Stevens came past me at the half way point, Then we just seemed to be going along at the same speed for a couple of miles, I made sure I didn’t draft him, then he disappeared up the road .

Ian get youself an Addiscombe top then I’ll be able to push you when I come past, I didn’t even recognise you, well probably couldn’t see ya.

58.15 should have been a 57 but there’s always next time.

Was happy with my riding and wasn’t spent at all at the end, learning curve for me at the mo and have some things to work on and improve on next week for a sure set faster time.

Heh, I didn't get speed working but got some power numbers to ponder, perhaps I should wade into the Power forum and start printing graphs out :)
10 min 265
20 min 248
30 min 245
60 min 244

Cadence nice and steady:

80-100 61%

Awesome seeing so many yellow ACC jerseys out on the road.

Bit more practice and fewer schoolboy errors for next time...
