Rain rain go away....

Postby Antloony » Thu Apr 17, 2008 6:52 pm

Well looks like saturdays CR is going to be a complete wash out, cold and with high winds according to every weather forecast I've seen to date and I for one dont relish the prospect of getting soaked to the skin so this could be the 1st CR I'll have missed since starting last november.

Therefore does anyone one in wonderfull ACC land fancy a ride out on sunday as its looking the better option for staying dry and the winds will be lighter.

Start off at 9.30 say from CSS and depending on who turns up etc can pick a route from there. Not looking for a mad thrash, a steady 18's type speed will suffice.

If there are no takers I shall go off on my own and be Billy.

Cheers

Ant.

Hi Ant,

Andy K and I are both ready to join up for this.

I've just had 5 days walking along coast paths in South Devon, followed by lots of food and drink (insert fat b***ard smiley here), so I need to get back on the bike and get some miles in. How about a loop out around the Surrey Hills? We could start on the CR route, then swing out around Dorking, Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill, Peaslake (maybe the wonderful Barhatch Lane?), Shere, Ranmore and Box Hill. There's a cafe at Shere, plus places for food and drink at Peaslake and Box.

Weather doesn't look good tomorrow. I've done ice, snow and howling headwinds in the last month or two, so I will make the CR if it's not too bad, but the forecast deluge may be just be too much.

Excellent ride today guys. Just over 65 miles on the clock for me when I got home.

Andy K and I met up with Ant, Brian, Kees and Jason at CSS at 9:30. Headed out on the CR route to Leigh, but carried on through Holmwood Common and North Holmwood to Dorking, then up the Coldharbour side of Leith HIll, through Holmbury, over Holmbury Hill and down to Peaslake, passing many London Dyanmos and Kingston Wheelers on the way.

From there, it was on to a rather more expensive cafe (tea room) at Shere, where cake was around £2.00 a slice (would have bee cheaper to buy a whole cake for £5.50) and tea was served in "lovely" china cups from a pot, rather than ACC mugs. The tea was quite dear.......I'm sure one fo the other guys will be along to tell you the price later. I don't think I'll be allowed to choose the cafe in future, but I assured them they were all hand sewn tea bags and Brian thought they'd probably all been hand perforated as well! :?

From Shere, it was up the North Downs (Coombe Hill I think?), up Crocknorth Lane on to Ranmore Common, down to Westhumble, and then a thrash up to the top of Box Hill, where we met Huw and Amy, demolishing cake and tea at the cafe.

After an agreeable chat. we all headed for home as an 8 piece group, except Andy and I split at the top of Pebble HIll to head South to Reigate and Horley.

A nice hilly work-out in agreeable company. All agreed that we ought to do this more often, maybe even as a CR variation on Saturday?

As a postscript, Ant was climbing like a demon today and then told us that he'd given up smoking 20 a day last October. I'm currently trying to find out what he was smoking!

Good right up there Del, just beat me to it.

As Del said excellent ride today, weather was a bit dull when we started out but it just got better and better untill we were bathed in glorious sunshine for the last few miles putting a smile on everyones face......well the smailes came once we'd got over the shock of being fleeced so much for the tea and cake. For the prices we were charged we should have been allowed to keep the chinaware and teapot

Highlight of the day was being flagged down by a cigarette wiedling maniac oap who parked up his car after overtaking us and came running accross the road to us and started mumbling on about some cycling website or other, Andy seemed to enjoy the chat though  . It is nice to see that they allow the average village idiot to drive though.

Felt good today, had my climbing legs on and felt comfortable just easing away from everyone once the going got steep, not something you'll hear me say very often.

Glad I held off and went today and not on yesterdays club run. Needed to get some hills in my legs and today was the perfect day for it. Hopefully repeat this soon either on a saturday or sunday, made a change from the club run, something we all agreed was no bad thing.

Cheers for a great day chaps. :D

It always makes me laugh how cyclists complain about the price of tea and cake, but go out and buy bikes and parts made out of carbon fibre for significant sums of money.

Cheers

True this maybe be Marek but its because we spend so much money on expensive carbon fibre parts that moneys so tight and we have to watch where the pennys go. :D

Lets face it though, £4.85 for a small slice of cake and a thimball full of tea is a bit steep.

Hmm, if only that was true. I have found that because you can afford a new bike it means that you must be able to afford either something equivalent or more expensive to buy for your other half.

So, when saving for a bike you actually have to save up enough money to buy two bikes as you will need what I have termed 'conscience funding account'. Unfortunately for me my new bike purchases over the last couple of years meant that my 'conscience funding account' took a massive hit this year and therefore the new wheels I had planned are still in the shop. Am happy to say though that we have the pleasure of a new Kitchen being fitted, its not made of carbon fibre so I think it looks cack though.

Cheers

Keith's conscience fund DOES actually have to buy two bikes :D

Just got new shoes (v bling) and new peadals.....perhaps it's because Keith's new wheels are on their way!
