Please . . . Someone help!

I've noticed that whenever I up my exercise I sleep perfectly fine the same night, but the night after that sleep is impossible!

For instance I went cycling on saturday and now sunday night I am as awake as an owl. Has anyone else suffered with this problem, if so do you know the remedy?

Mmm generally more exercise tend to leads to more and better sleep. But I know after an intensive 2 -3 day block my sleep is sometime rubbish for a few days. City, perhaps you need to look at what happens after your big cycle ride: diet, sleep time and length etc. Or just accept that its part of what happens when you increase exercise intensity - so that your body may and will do weird things until it gets used to your new regular but slightly harder exercise regime. Good luck :D

Real owls get round this usually by eating mice and suchlike. I'm not suggesting you do the same - but thinking about it may put you off further owl like tendencies...? :shock:

I will try and get on the bike everyday this week and see how my sleep pattern goes.

I find it hard to sleep after long marathon training runs. Try this http://www.sleepstrong.com/nocte-weight.htm It really works! You can get it at Evans and it is cheaper from places like Wiggle on the net. It works for me. At £1.50 a pop, I only use it after very long runs/rides but find ovaltine works well inbetween.

I find alcohol helps :D .

Oh, and a kip in the afternoon after a long ride helps. 30mins or so and it helps me recover immediately and sleep normally at night. Otherwise I'm knackered in the evening. Not sure if it would help with the 2nd night waking but a nice kip is always welcome so got to be worh a try :wink: .

City - if you can identify what is it that is keeping you awake you can probably get most of the way to a solution without any hassle.

For instance, your body may be stressed from not being used to the amount of physical effort. E.g. maybe your blood-sugar levels are a bit low or perhaps you are a bit dehydrated, but not enough for you to be fully conscious of it. More regular exercise will have an impact on your metabolism and you may need to eat more or eat at slightly different times or eat more slow-burn high-quality carbohydrates. Also make sure you are fully hydrated during the day. Perhaps the time spent exercising has put stress on the rest of your weekend and this is stopping you from sleeping. Or maybe you are simply excited by the fun of riding more in great company! On the day you ride you are knackered so you can sleep - but the day after you are still buzzin and you can't!

Place to start is to try to ask yourself what is actually stopping you from sleeping and work backwards from there. You'll probably work out a solution pretty quickly....

Ahh I was thinking about some Alcohol last night and how I wished I had kept some wine...a glass would have knocked me out nicely as I am so light weight when it comes to drink! lol :lol:
