Newbie Insurance?

Postby sonic909 » Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:33 pm

Hello everyone...

I am quite new to all this road riding.

I have been cycling to work for the past two years or so on quite a cheap mountain bike, and not felt the need to be worried about insurance.

I have recently bought a £1400 road bike, and want to insure it incase it gets damaged or stolen... i also want to come out on a club run, and have seen talk of 3rd party (probably a good idea for me!).
Also about a year back i was injured whilst on a night out and put out of work for a while, so an insurance policy that pays me if i get injured too would be nice seeing as on a fast bike i will no doubt fall off...!

A few companies seem to offer it, which is the most commonly used? and which is regaurded as the better?

Thanks for any advice, i hope to meet a few of you on a coulsdon south saturday ride soon!

CTC membership is a good idea for any cyclist anyway as it helps fund them and they do a lot of good work for our cause.

With the membership you get your 3rd party insurance cover so that covers that one.
Person cover - I'd be surprised if you could get cover included unless very expensive as you would get NHS treatment. Otherwise private medial cover is the other way, fortunately I get this through work. Remember that if it is not your fault, say you were knocked off by a car then it would be claimed off their insurance anyway.

Bike Insurance - Back with the CTC for me. There are various ways and you could have it included on your home contents insurance (which a lot of people do), if not already covered. I use the insurance through the CTC (Butterworths) as although it isn't the cheapest way to insure your bike the cover is extremely comprehensive, including any damage/theft incurred whilst travelling abroad or when it's in transit. It even covers you if you're camping so long as the bike is either in the tent with you :? of chained to a tree or similar. The CTC is the Cycling Tourist Club so expect you to be out and about with your bike, not have it locked down in a fort knox style garage all the time.

Cheers,

Andrew.

To add to Andre's advice:

CTC can be found here and their insurance details here.

I would also add that the CTC lawyers were excellent when I was knocked off my bike by an uninsured driver 5 years ago.

I think it was Grahame who mentioned M&S for insurance, good call Sir.
My sitution is as follows

Current Insurer : Zurich contents £395.00 (but they point blank refused to insure my bike) £1,000 max.
P.S. I also got through to an Indian call centre who asked me what size engine I had on my 'Push bike'.

Quote for Butterworths yesterday : £385.00 and If I wanted to race the premium would go up to £512.00. I can insure a car cheaper!!!!!

So that would be 395 + 385 = £780.00 per annum

M&S contents insurance quote today : £393.94 :D
This is a premier cover, accidental damage, away from home cover, any item up to £4,000.00, bikes are covered as standard.

I have a month to look around if anybody knows of a better one than that, then please post a reply. I also assume that M&S are a good company to do business with?
