Fixing p*nct***s

Postby Dombo » Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:49 am

Anyone here bother patching road tubes? I had two simultaneous flats on Sunday at end of Legs of Steel route in pouring rain - luckily just by Kingswood 3 miles from home so called out Mrs Dombo SAR to collect me. I often patch my mtb tubes successfully, but road ones? Worth the bother or just chuck and replace. Also is there any difference in p*nct*** -proofness between the cheapo tubes eg Decathlon 2 for £1.99, and Contis or others at £4 a pop?
Thanks.

Don't bother myself, but then I do use the Decathlon cheap ones most of the time for general stuff. My experience if I am honest is that the expensive ones may be lighter but they are just as prone. I went through a stage of punctures at one time when I was using Gatorskin tyres (4 in one ride) and found it was costing me an arm and a leg hence my preference for the cheap ones :D

I have tubes that have practically doubled in weight with the amount of patches on them

best to mend them in batches, wait till you have a good handful of tubes to mend

yep, reduce, reuse, recycle! :D

Looking forward to mending some tonight! Hopped on my turbo this morning (in place of racing at a washed out Palace last night) only to find my rear wheel was flat. Checked it and found a bit of glass had caused a puncture but also that the rear tyre was worn in some places - so instead of turbo training I changed my tyre. Went to fix the puncture and found al my glue had gone so will get some later.

You can get 'glueless' patches. They are called the pre-glued Super Patch

Just rough the tube up and stick a patch on it.
Saves carring a big kit, I hope they work!!! as thats all I carry now. Oh and a new tube.

If your'e out & have run out of spare tyres they work well enough to get home on. but you have to repair or replace the tube once you get home.

Hi Mark, yea, I got them too and would agree with Sylv and others, fine for emergency but not as good as the proper stuff. Oh, I usually take 3 spare inner tubes with me, as you're most likely to puncture when its wet and I don't want to be mending a puncture in the cold and rain, 2 spares usually cover all cases. The 3rd one is to sell to club mates who puncture with no spare tubes at highly inflated prices (pun intended).

I follow the late John Smith's sage words....when the number of patches on a tube gets into double figures, it is time for a new one 8)

BTW I never race on a patched tube, always new ones and recycle on to my training/commuting bike.

I repair all my tubs as well - if anyone wants theirs repaired???, save sending them to Mr Burgin - my rates are cheaper too
