[quote]*half wheeling - this is when two people ride side by side with one continually edging half a wheel in front of the other resulting in an increase in speed as the half-wheelee keeps trying to catch up and the half-wheeler keeps edging half a wheel in front..."

Never heard of it. 8)

This is the old version of the code, if anyone is interested.

ACC CR code of conduct: At CSS Coulsdon South Stn).ALL First timers (& non members) should introduce themselves to the Captain (Monty) or Vice Captains in his absence. For the first few CR's, whatever your ability you must ride ONLY in the 13MPH,15MPH or 17MPH grps & not in the 19MPH or 21MPH grps, until you have learned the Agreeable CR etiquette. This gives you an opportunity to get to know existing members, and then you can progress to the pace, which suits your ability. This includes riding in a bunch, looking backwards briefly only @ the front, maintaining a cohesive grp, rotating @ the front to share the work effort, maintain a consistent pace, riding predictably, max 2 abreast, no half-wheeling, Communicating /signalling up & down the grp on hazards & movement, holding a wheel, thru & off & adhering to the Highway Code.

So shall I ask one of the techy lot to post it in the announcements?

And how about a plea for more VCs to lead the faster groups?

I think the code of conduct needs to be slighlty different for the 19mph and over groups. Some of these people have racing ambitions and need to get used to surges in pace. If they just ride at a consistent pace, they will never make the jump to the training group or be able to race.

On the subject of non ACC riders, I would like to allow any experienced racer to be allowed to join the groups e.g. Dave Kennett, Simon H etc. These riders have a wealth of experience and should be made to feel welcome.

Jeez this post is just too long to read it all!

I have no problem with non-club members joining our clubruns. Especially as it has been mentioned experienced racers - but obviously not trouble-makers.

As to the bad riding, I haven't witnessed any so cannot comment really. I hope I haven't done any myself.

But, I am planning on racing Sunday and might join the 19s or 18s this week ... I hope it's ok. I am ready to sign an agreement not to attack on the hills or contest the sprint :)

So why don't we consider changing the definition of what we do on a Saturday morning.
After all, a Clubrun is just that.....a clubrun, whereas a training group is something different.
So what if we consider the 13,15,16 speed groups to be "Clubrun Groups", and the faster 17, 19, 21 speed groups to be "Training Groups"
Different Titles, different aims, different etiquettes.
Just a suggestion.

That is a good point John, when I call out the training ride on Saturdays it has a reputation attached and I see people taking sharp intakes of breaths, shaking of heads and the sucking teeth. However this is healthy riding and perhaps the only way to get aspiring people to progress to that level is to develop the 'basic skills' at lower levels. We sort of do this a bit where we have the sprint to Charlwood at most of the levels and the through and off but we could extend this to breaks on the hills or controlled surges on the flats. Obviously safety would be the key but it might take the rigeour and inflexibility out of the higher speed groups.

Perhaps we should have the traditional clubruns at 15, 16, 17 and an 18 group and the 'training' rides on an 18, 19 and 20+ groups

details could be discussed, but it is the principle I was suggesting.

Do we need more Montys? Please no!

John - you have made some good points.

This situation has reared up for as long as i can remember- the 19 group is definately a bigger step up- some of the people are fairly fit, most of the 18 group i ride with are more than capable of a 20mph group and come the summer (please) the group will be doing over 21 avg- because we can!
Dont get too hung up about the avg speed- just make sure when you are in those groups that you ride safely- some of the riders are fairly slow up the hills, that is why they have a dig- just so they are not too far behind at the top- believe me I know all about it

There are a few mavericks however, they dont hold a wheel, do nothing at the front and are a right pain in the harris- you will soon know who these people are and how to advoid them

I think one of the conversations on this thread has reached a consensus.

Alex / John, you are pretty much on the money. Call it Full-fat, Vindaloo, Training or whatever - there's one or more groups where the pace will be varied and dare I say it riders will take delight in seeing their fellow clubmates struggling at times. And there's other groups (the majority) to cater for riders who want to ride a consistent, even pace with the emphasis on a social ride - call them the Skimmed, Korma or Clubrun groups or whatever. Plus there's likely to be a flavour or two in between.

Errr.....So what happens next :?: Clearly we don't want any more instances where those who enjoy their clubrun 'mild' are given any more unwelcome 'spice'. I suggest some fine tuning of the groups titles / objectives for each ride is needed, these need some peer review and then should be published. There also needs to be an onus on VCs to ensure the rules of the group are clearly articulated in consistent language everyone understands at the outset of the ride. From the (ahem) limited occasions I have been out, I'm not sure that happens all that well.....
