12 things you did not and will not learn in school.

This should be posted in all schools and work places ...

A bit American I know but some truths here (it seems to hit home more if you have kids)

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 :
The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 :
If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 :
Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Rule 12: Be nice to Vice Captains, they are the salt of the earth  .

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Ever the optimist(?) I tell my children that life may not be fair but that's because we make it work like that and you can make it fairer by your actions and can demand fairer treatment or things will not change, so : Rule 1: life is not fair - Change it! Challenge it! (up to a point and then work around it)

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

"The world" here means people in general and some won't care about your self-esteem but others will, sadly the people who don't are usually the ones with more power.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

At least you can change your job!

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Having flipped burgers, done kitchen work etc this is Cr*p more likely they called it taking any job that goes to get some money so you don't go hungry

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

If only!

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

True!

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Children seem to be naturally competative and find other ways of being the best etc any way.

Or you might be one!

Rule 12: Be nice to Vice Captains, they are the salt of the earth .

all good american competitive sentiments - except his firm have just been fined another €900 million for continued non-compliance with its antitrust judgement, in which they were found to have abused their dominant position. But as he says - life's not fair - get used to it!

He might consider that fair after pushing his luck, I wonder how much he made or strengthened his product position as a result

That reminds me, I must get my A Levels adjusted for inflation again this year.

I think grade inflation means that I currently have 37 A levels all at A* grades

This doesn't stand up to any scrutiny. According to rule 3, the only people who earn a stack of cash are those who have earned it - which seems fair enough. But, according to rule 1, life's not fair. So, there must some loaded people out there who haven't earned it? Presumably they're consorting with bears cr*pping in woods.

And don't get me started on 5!

A level results have improved every year since I took mine. This can only mean that I took mine in the hardest year ever  .

very good. school is irriatingly unrealistic. I mean whoever said its not the winning it counts its the taking part, probably never won.

tbh we are taught too much pointless stuff. look at the Apprentice, if that is the cream of business acumen no wonder the economy is going into a recession.

we've spent two years learning micro-economics of which a fair bit is able to be implemented in real life.

GCSEs are relatively easy, yet everyone makes it seem like they determine the end of the world or something. I mean tbh i dont really care about stupid poems and things like that. What annoys me is pointless subjects such as R.S. which just have to be so politically correct and just skim over the differing religious views.

However, at the end of the day you still have to play the system whether you like it or not.

Oh and some minister got jeered at by teachers, because she was such a long way out with her observations on education etc.

As Bob Dylan puts it though, "The times they are a-changing", and I feel they will change big-time.
