Millar interview in Guardian

The wrong gear

"He was known as the 'Boy Dave', a prodigious cycling talent who last year became world champion and had his sights set on two golds in Athens next month. But now David Millar is in disgrace, facing a ban from the sport for using the illegal performance-enhancing drug EPO. Why did he do it? He tells William Fotheringham about the pressure to win, the shame of his exposure - and how, deep down, he wanted to get caught"

I read the article yesterday; it seems he really wants to find a positive out of this and help young riders who feel that they're under the cosh. What's immediately apparent is that he's thought about it a lot, to the point where it consumed him.

Even when he's given his suspension I hope he can rise above it. He said that his experience with British Cycling in Manchester was so positive (with their 'no needles' approach, even to vitamins) that he was inspired to ride clean. Big ups to BCF!

There will always be tricheurs, but let's hope there'll be more good guys as a result of his story.

Oh dear. I wonder if an amnesty might be the only way to sort the sport out?
