I finally popped my Crystal Palace cherry, so now I know what it is really like . Hadn't intended riding but around 5.30pm thought it was a nice evening why not! This proved to be a good plan as I arrived in a state of panic more from a logistics perspective than actually worrying about what lay ahead.
Saw a few other agreeables and then had a warm up on the special Addiscombe oval (i.e. the lower car park) where myself and Steve were joined by George, Andrew and Mark. As I had never actually ridden the course I was keen to get a few laps in beforehand. The thought of riding blind with 60 other riders on a technical course would not be the smartest thing to do. Unfortunately, I stayed out too long, as I reached the start/finish for the last time everyone had already lined up so I joined at the rear of the bunch. A schoolboy error I hope not to repeat.
Off we went and I was trying hard to move up through the bunch but this proved difficult as there was very little room for passing without trying a Schumacher overtaking manoeuvre and risking wiping out the bunch. Thus, the only area for overtaking was the slight incline round the back where I managed to gain a few places on each lap. I felt quite good but by lap 6 the hill started to take it's toll especially as I was trying to gain places and I knew my time was limited. I managed to hang on up the hill on the 7th lap but by the time I reached the start/finish line I heard a big pop. At first I thought it was a puncture but then realised that my elastic had gone .
I managed to hook up with about 5 or 6 riders and managed a few laps but eventually I had to let go as I was paying for digging deep. Then within a few laps Andrew joined me and provided encouragement including the wise words that only a tester could provide in a road race......"ride steady". I was struggling from my "unsteady" antics earlier so spent the majority of the time on Andrew's wheel and then let go for a couple of laps. Admittedly after a few laps of tester-esque riding I did find my pace again and managed to hook up with Andrew once more and do some work on the front. I wasn't sure how long I should keep riding but decided to drop out with 3 laps (6 on the board) to go as I didn't want to get caught up with the real race. Managed 24 laps in all, no idea of distance, HR or speed but really enjoyed the race .
Can't wait til the next Palace to see if I can survive more than 7 laps. I must say that I really like the CP circuit, I love the technical aspects, there are some wicked corners for a bit of Valentino Rossi action....must remember my knee sliders next time. I have raced at Hillingdon before but it doesn't feel special the way Palace does so big thumbs up!!
A big thanks to all the support round the track, it was really appreciated.
