Thinking...

Postby Ivor » Fri May 16, 2008 1:28 pm

When I'm riding into work I often realize I'm thinking about all sorts of random things.
What about everyone else? or am I just not riding hard enough? :)

Hmmm, actually thinking about it even when I'm pushing hard I do tend to daydream, as I took one of my legendary investigative er "short cuts" this week, apart from finding myself hypothesising about the worst smelling dead animal (badger) - (and I can't believe Dr Hutch pointed out the same this week! what are the chances...)
I also found myself pondering scarecrows (and the design thereof) and classic MG's. (er ok yes and Michelle Pfeiffer.)

Does everyone else find, on a long ride, that their mind has time to think?

Not on my ride to work - it's too short (and too early) to think about anything in the morning (and too tired) in the evening, but on the 12 hour, I did gaze across at the fields and wonder how much horsepower a tractor has etc

Not trying hard enough? I just spin to work in a fairly easy gear most days.

In the morning the first bit is reasonably quiet, but I'm still half asleep (it's the only way to get over Spout Hill at that time of the morning), after that too much traffic and pains in the backside jumping lights etc to drift off.

On the way home I tend to keep an eye out for the odd drafting possibility as the traffic clears once I've got passed Crystal Palace.

Don't think about the Pfif too much Ivor (certainly not in the rubber catsuit) it'll make cycling more difficult!

Well the first bit, once I've killed myself getting up the downs, is just cruising along quiet roads so daydreaming pretty much all the way to wickham when I need to start concentrating on traffic.

and of course the reverse process if I ride home.

Michelle Pfeiffer? You're showing your age there, Ivor. Don't tell me there's been no-one else these past 25 years!

What do I think about on my commute? I do like to use the time for some low-level brooding, but generally I'm too busy concentrating on not getting squished and avoiding potholes to be very constructive (or destructive).

well, I think of lots of random things as well, some depressing, some not, but at specific times:

cycling through dulwich park I concentrate on no-hands cycling and keeping an eye out for dogs randomly running in front of me and admiring the view of the park.

Through Brixton, its concentrate on the traffic, dodgy car driving and bike handling (pedal and petrol powered).

Once past Brixton its commuter racing time and so I focus on beating my enemies!

Then the last stage of my journey is gentle spinning time to warm down before work, here my mind wanders off again.

No not every day. Depends on my mood and the weather. I try and do it three to four times a week when the weather's good (or if there's a train strike/engineering incident).
