BUSA Road Race Champs

Postby -Adam- » Sun May 18, 2008 10:28 pm

Yesterday I rode the BUSA RR Champs up in Leicstershire.

150km around a stunning course which basically involved one long straight road, followed by a brief twisty section, a 75km/h downhill section, another long straight road then finished off by a difficult mile long climb, with the finish line just after the summit.

It was a very very tough race, some real strong riders meant the pace was never easy. There were a handful of riders who ride for the likes of Pinarello, Kinesis and PCA Ciclos Uno and have been riding Premier Calendar races while I've been pissing about in Surrey League races! It was also blatently apparent that I am by far not the only student to use University as a front for being a professional cyclist! :D

The sheer length of the race meant it was a real war of attrition, each time up the climb riders were dropped never to be seen again. I got dropped the second (of 8 ) times up the climb, but fought my way back on tooth and nail with a couple of other riders. After that the pace became a touch more sensible. Although we still averaged 38km/h for the entire 3hrs 55mins of the race.

Around 60 riders took the start, but by the closing laps we had ditched the hangers on, which included most of the Oxford and Cambridge toffs :P, there were about 25 guys left. Elite rider Pete Williams (Pinarello RT and Malcom Elliott and Russell Downing's domestique) had ridden everyone off his wheel and was heading to a very impressive solo victory. Another couple of riders were away, both from Loughborough (who dominated the race) and save for one more solo lunatic claiming fourth it was down to a bunch sprint up the final climb. I gave all I had up it but had been cramping up each time we hit the hill the last 3 times so my power was hardly record breaking. I managed to hang on to roll over the line 13th.

Which I am a tad disappointed with as I was really hoping for a top 10, and feel I ought to have been up there. But thats racing. It was my longest race to date by far, and certainly the hardest. A real strong field meant there was never really an easy moment, one time along the flat section one rider dragged the whole bunch along at 35mph for literally 8km! And he still rode away in the end for 3rd! Even the quality of the 3rd and 4th cats was much higher than it is around the South East. Perhaps we have it easy down here??

Next stop... South East Regionals...

(There will be a more thorough post mortem on my blog later tomorow, after I've failed another exam :? )

Great effort Adam. Cramps generally occur when you're really stretching your fitness levels to breaking point so it must have been a real hard race. 3hrs.55mins now that the kind of time/duration I think a certain H. Williams would enjoy. :D The two Dan's from Cyclos Uno are doing well. D.Patten (came 2nd last year) especially seems incredibly strong this year 8) ... Must have a lot of free time on their hands those Loughborough Uni boys

Well done Adam, that's a really fantastic result.

Yes Loughborough look strong with 5 out of the top 10.

I bet you are pleased you came in front of No 16 ...now who has a name like Blase Bonnevile  Oh must be a Cambridge Toff.

That sounds like a pretty tough race and a sound enough result. I assume that Dan Sullivan, from the Paragon is injured currently? It would have been interesting to see how he had got on too. I guess a lot of the Loughborough crowd are reading Sports Sciences and are required to get out and train as part of their degree? That's an unfair advantage over everyone else!

I will add that organising a race for students must be a real nightmare. If you start too early, no one will turn-up as they'll all still be in bed. Equally, if there's anything decent on TV that day, no one will turn up either. I'm quite impressed to see a good, strong turnout. :D

Tony, Dan had an exam on Saturday (!!) so was unable to race, but I don't think he's on top form either right now (he is in his final year after all).

Also, re organising the race, yes, fair play to Loughborough for organising, although by putting the race on in May to avoid their own exam season in June, they put it right slap bang in the middle of everyone elses! And so lost out on a few entries there, also, one of the Loughborough riders was telling me that they had a couple of guys doing other Elite races that day, think he mentioned the Hillingdon GP. That said they dominated the race, when Pete Williams had made his attack they had 8 guys at the front trying (although not that hard) to chase him down. It was great fun sitting on their wheels playing the innocent one man team game

Have to say though, at £12 entry (which my union paid anyway!) it was probably the cheapest race I have ever done or ever likely to do mile for mile. That is if you discount the hotel on Friday night, and about £50 in petrol to haul my little car up there...

Well done Adam good result over a long race - but then it must've felt short after Flanders :) .

Always used to be that way, but before Sports Science degrees it was always something geographical to do with soil studies. Was with Rugby anyway.

Good write up Adam. How did you manage with carbs and fluids in such a long race?

Had 6 gels, one per lap from the second lap in... maybe could have done with a couple more in the closing stages. Had two large bottles of energy drink for the race as I had no helper to pass up any more. Not that it helped most riders as most people seem incapable of grabbing them anyway! Probably could have done with more drinks though, maybe another small bottle as I was certainly 'conserving' over the last lap and a bit...
