Bike Crash

Postby Michelle » Sun May 18, 2008 12:24 pm

I just crashed my nice new bike!

I wanted to trawl through the minds on the Forum to ask for advice.

I crashed in a womens race yesterday. The damage doesn't appear to be too bad (to the bike).

New shifters needed.
Front mech needs adjusting.
Possibly need new handlebar tape.

Biggest problem is that there is a chip off the rear stay on the left. My bike is carbon. How do I get it checked out to see if the frame is ok?

Also I trashed my helmet (cracked all the way through in 6 places), my Addiscombe top now has no neck, my thermal top has holes in it.

I have gold BC memebership. This also gives insurance as well. Does anyone know if I can claim for bike repairs/ new kit through this?

The BCF insurance does not cover anything in relation to damage, think it is a very rudimentary cover if you injure yourself and they pay legal costs or something like that.

Cheers

Depending on the helmet make some companies have a broken return and replace scheme. My Giro was replaced for £40 and GB had the details but check your manufacturer's web. Sorry to hear about your crash - I thought I saw you got a place ? Depending on the frame construction and make some sections may be replaced but it takes time. I would be minded to talk to http://www.cyclesdauphin.com/about_main.htm and ask to speak to Rowan who is usually quite knowledgeable.

No, the insurance cover is for personal injury, or third party liability.

and even then it's pretty low, the third party insurance is worth having.
However, it's worth getting proper bike insurance, there's a pretty good deal with bc insurance.
otherwise if all else fails your next best bet is to see what you can claim through your house insurance.

As for helmets it's something like a 40% discount for the specialized helmet replacement service and very quick turnaround.

Thanks for the info. Will now be looking at CTC cover - which we had until April - and BC cover to see which would suit us best.

The helmet has gone to Madison Cycles ( Giro UK distributors) with a cheque for £40 today. i have borrowed a friends and it looks very commuterville :?

I'm gonna take my bike to Butlers tomorrow at lunchtime to get Pete Wise to look at it and pull it around a bit. They can then tell me if it is trashed and whether to bother getting the front mech sorted or not. Or how much it would take to repair.

Keith K has very kindly offered to get me a new Addiscombe top - sounds like it is a normal mercy mission to me? In any case it's a lovely gesture.

Note to self : DO NOT CRASH YOUR BIKE AGAIN
