My heroic little brother

Postby Tamar » Wed May 21, 2008 10:00 am

I'm so proud I'm telling everyone about my marvellous little brother, Duncan.

He lives a couple 100 miles from the Chinese earthquake and when his friend Matt (who lives in Chengdu) was contacted by the authorities to see if he could help in the rescue effort, Matt rang Dunks, who packed his bag and headed up to Chengdu where they met up with the military rescue effort, travelled by road to Dujiangyan and then by foot into the epicentre to use their caving & ropework skills in the rescue. He's now back in Chengdu and awaiting further instructions from the authorities.

V v proud of him. What a hero.

There's an article about their exploits here:

Top boy - takes after his Sis

My employer has agreed to match fund donations up to £50k I think so just off to ping a few quid over. I just can't get my head round the scale of this....

He is much braver than his sis. I'm not sure if I could volunteer to walk 60km uphill through dense undergrowth with little or no footpath, carrying a 40kg pack, braving landslides and aftershocks of up to 6.1 to go rummaging around in unstable debris full of corpses. I honestly don't think I'd have the courage.

There was a pretty good article in the Sunday Times about my brother's exploits (although not entirely accurate - he is 33 not 31) http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article3999044.ece

After three days on standby in Chengdu they were stood down and he is now back home in Wulong.

Although the initial work of rescuing survivors is now drawing to a close, the considerably larger task of providing shelter, food, treatment and sanitation for over four million people will require much longer-term funding.
