Road Rash

Postby the other Steve Dennis » Mon Aug 02, 2004 2:59 pm

Ok so you'd think after 20 years of riding I should have this down to a fine art, but to be honest I do't think I've ever had such a nasty case! ouch.

The crash was painless (almost) the spray on skin was excruciating - I dread spraying it again to remove the old layer!!!!!

Online information is telling me to use gel 'second skin' dressings that keep it moist and cover it.

Anyone with a definative plan of action.(preferably less painful than the spray on stuff).

Cheers.

Photos? Sure!! just need to get them onto the old addiscombe forim at some time first....

By the way - current road rash trend is gel based pads that adhere to the wound and stay put for a week, allowing the body to exude what it needs to be rid of into the gel and create new skin without scabbing, therefore no scarring and supposedly a cleaner and quicker process. Should have seen me taking the plastic skin off today though -

Sounds lovely. Hope you mend quickly and are back on the bike soon. Or maybe you're dead hard and riding through the pain anyway.
By the way, did you go to the NYC championships? - some good pictures and stuff on cyclingnews.com

my brother used gel pads on his knee when he came off his motorbike last year. you definitely wouldnt leave it on for a week. 2 days at a time is enough so im told because it starts to stink. scarring isnt too bad especially considering it was very close to the bone.

Actually I crashed on the way to a race! on the morning of the NYCC Champs. I raced anyway though suffered a mechanical due to the crash I guess but finished.

It was 8am and 95% humidity and about 85 degrees. The heavens opened as I rode home and the ensuing thunderstorm was horrendous, certainly not a day to stand at the side of the road so we decided to stay in, work on my wounds and watch it all live on tv. Paul Sherwen was a commentator, he is a cycling God over here. You guys ever heard of Bob Roll, he's America's version of Duffield, kinda. Tv coverage was great except for the adverts every second lap or so, they were pushing the event as a sign that NYC would be a great Olympic host, unfortunately the rain kept the big crowds away. Saying that I'd prefer to see it in London.

Woke this morning and Jayne's comments are correct, new gel pads needed - yeucchhh.

And I wont be riding until I get my rear wheel straightened out.

I see and hear that Goodwood was a resounding success, well done to everyone involved especially Keith who I know put so much work and passion into the event.

More from me soon.

i never got the chance to get that kind of road rash, but i did the palm of my right hand twice in the past year (first after on otb locking the front brake whilst racing the beach cruiser at Eastway, second tripping whilst trying to run drunk), and i left the injured skin all the time to fresh air, it does take a while to form this second skin (it never seems to run out of liquid pus, ugh), but i guess this is easier done on a hand than a leg, with clothes etc. quite amazing seeing the daily progress of the scarring. i found it helped to cut out any amount of dead skin leftover there, which is only going to delay the full return to normal. hey i even have a picture of my recovering hand (hands up those who want to see it)

ooooh, flesh wounds always look the worst, especially close up.

you're pretty handy with a camera, those from Sunday were good on the other post as well
