Treating haematoma

Postby Ivor » Thu May 22, 2008 2:31 pm

Hmmm, I totally disagree with the advice in this weeks CW about haematoma treatment.
It suggests leaving them to go down on their own and massage them to reduce.
This is the complete opposite to the advice I received which was to under no circumstances massage them and to have them drained if they're large.
I ended up with one after my big crash at the start of the year and because of the pain and being unable to sleep I had it drained. Problem solved instantly and, once the bruising went, all's back to normal.
Perhaps my injury was less severe than the athletes described in the article (although I came off at 38mph and the tennis ball sized lump sounds about right), but I'm surprised by the "outlook" there - lump almost gone four years later and the area is numb .

Has anyone else had one in the past? received treatment? advice?

I friend of my mine got a haemotoma after coming off mountain biking and he went to A/E and got it drained and spent 2 days in hospital. If you have a haematoma get to A/E I reckon.
