Pacing for longer TTs - Tips please.

Postby Andrew G » Thu May 22, 2008 8:47 pm

I've got my first TT over a 25 at the weekend, a 42 miles SPOCO, followed the week after by a 50 mile SPOCO and then the SCCU 50's not long after that.

Sooooo do any of our TT stars have any tips or tactics they employ for pacing on longer TTs that they would be kind enough to pass on, pretty please.

Ta muchly.

I've ridden the SCCU 50 course. You only do Tollgate on lap 1, second time around you do a quick out and back off the farthing interchange (immediately after where the 25 finishes) and then basically do the 25 course again minus Tollgate.

Last time I rode about the pace for a 25 for lap 1 except I kept it steady after the Southwater turn. I did what at the time was a 25 PB on the first lap. Lap 2 is flatter and when I hit Southwater for the second time I pushed a bit harder and finished the 2nd 25 a bit quicker than the first.

I carried a bottle of water, a bottle of cack and two energy bars. I stuffed the first bar at the Farthing interchange on lap 1 and the second.....well to be honest I forget

This year I think I will adopt a similar approach except at higher speeds. Also when I hit Southwater for the 2nd time it's tank emptying time.

Criminy - that almost sounds like a plan - hope it's of some use mate.

Also.....on the SCCU 100

The first two thirds of the course are definitely quicker than the last third and the final 11 miles sucks....big time. I used two bottles at a time on this one, water in one, blackcurranty flavour cack in the other. Took a drink every 10 mins alternating water then cack. Swapped bottles at 67 miles. Three bars for this one plus a caffeine gel thing after about 90 miles. I was f*cked by then and most of the gel went on me gloves  . Speed wise steady as she goes, no warm up for these longer ones, just warm up as you go.

Now - what do the proper long distance merchants have to say eh....?

...and don't fall off on any roundabouts  .

Cheers Snoop. I don't know that I fancy trying to stuff bars in on a 50, I'll carry an opened one just in case but maybe try and go the energy drink and gel route.

[quote]The first two thirds of the course are definitely quicker than the last third

I fully expect that to be the case anyway  .
The 100, now that should be interesting and I'll definitely be shoving some food in.

Yes - get a powertap/HRM so you don't have to ask for advice on how to pace yourself - you can actually find out for yourself

It depends what you want to achieve...

Most of the advice so far is on getting round and "surviving" rather than racing.

When I did my 2 best 100's, I spent 20 minutes warming up - how can you expect to go off at 25mph pace without  and certainly for the 50's.

Pacing wise - on average 50 speed is about 95% of 25 speed and 100 is about 90%.

As a rough rule of thumb, 50 pace is 2* 25 + 4 minutes. 100 pace is 2* 50 plus 15 minutes, or 4*25 +25 minutes.

No a normal person :D . Anyway neither tell you how to pace yourself but can only be used as mere tools to assist. I'll stick with my LLH (legs, lungs, heart) thanks.

Easy I don't. I will be trying to race round, and have a short warm up first.

Look at the title Adam - this is not the place for 10's - hardly worth getting the bike out for  Do a proper distance - 100 or 12 hours :D :D

Fair enough, although I seem to be washing my hair on every day that a 50, 100, or 12hr TT takes place, for the next 100 years... oh well
