On Track

Postby Steve B » Sat May 24, 2008 10:23 pm

Wow, a whole new world of cycling fun opened up to me today :D

Herne Hill was just a place I'd heard about from various people who'd 'ridden track' before and it sounded ok, but I'd always thought "no I'm quite happy doing what I'm doing, I haven't got time to get involved in something else". Damn, should have done it before

Being as I'd never ridden 'fixed' before, I was actually sh1**1ng myself at the thought of not being able to stop pedalling, and 'a bike with no brakes - madness'. But my fears subsided once on the track, and after 10 mins or so everything seemed quite natural. I must admit though, I did have a couple of scares at the end of two sprints when (at the finish line and you are knackered) I naturally went to free wheel. Boy you get a scare , won't do that again.

I'm definately going to go again and urge anyone who has thought about it, or even never thought about it, to get to HH and give it a go, you'll love it :D. I think Mark Leedham is going to try and organise getting people down there in a few weeks time, but I'll let him tell you about that. Watch out for the thread :!:

Can't wait to be back on track

What's the score with driving down there? Can you park?
Does it cost to park?
What kit do you need to take? eg pedals to fit to the hire bike.
Cheers.

There is parking there, some on the tarmac around and behind the grandstand, other on the grass to the right with the track on your left. It's free. If you are there a little bit early then there should be a space, if not you can use the surrounding roads or Burbage (sp?) itself, some have meters others you can grab a spot for free - some on the roads have no yellow lines.

Pedals and a pedal spanner (or allen key if your pedals don't have a flat for a spanner) - if you don;t have a spanner then there'll be one there knocking about but you'd have to wait your turn. You don't need anything else, but again an earlier arrival will help you get more choice of hire bike. They had a new bunch of Fuji bikes last year but I don't know how many of these there are, so if you're later then you might get one of the older bikes.
